I Could Have
I could have treated you like a queen,
The queen of all my realms,
All your sadness I could have seen,
Your sad shadows I'd overwhelm.
I could have been your faithful knight,
Making you the happiest princess ever
And do everything with you genuinely right
As we could have been something together.
I could have been the light that gave you life,
Given you whatever you needed,
Fought endless battles just to end your strife,
For you all my treasures I could have conceded.
I could have made you a home
Where you could open up about your darkest fears,
And be your own personal tome
Where you kept these demons as I wiped your tears.
I could have given you a myriad of myself,
Always there for you whenever you needed me
Without tiring of holding you like a sturdy shelf,
Given you millions of food just to see your glee.
I could have served you till the end of my days,
Fall dead in my service of making you happy
But reality doesn't work in such hopeful ways
And I know what could have been... can never be.
