Home of the Brave

Schackled the child cast in shame by a father's disapproval. Clipped the fledgling un-nuzzled by an indifferent mother. Brave the neglected one and miraculous her recovery climbing with effortful feet the mountain to sun and stars. ©Kathryn McLoughlin Collins December 5, 2012

You have mastered the art of the short, powerful poem. Words like 'un-nuzzled' and 'effortful' are so imaginative! A discarded daughter who finds her own way out of the cage. Your couplet construction and title enhance this remarkable piece. Well done Kathryn! Love, Keith

How resilient and tender the young can be and how hardened and callous adults can be. Great telling poem.

Ah, the courage is required to defy the imbittered and just as much to finally forgive a cycle of hurts. Love this chum.. must fly

Sorry about that. My girl has a wee cold and is waking up every 2 hours! Back to your poem, reminds me of the horrors which have been on our news (Canadian) this past bit...one child spanked to death for not going to sleep and wetting her pants. I can no longer watch news... angels crucified...

This says so much in just a few words. Reminds me of conflict, feels familiar...Thanks for reading so many of my poems...I SM you the other day. I haven't heard since, I hope everything is okay...Hugs, Holly Moore

Thought provoking imagery you've used here. Instead of being given wings to fly the child is shackled by disapproval. This unfortunately happens alot when parents decide to live their dream through their children instead of letting their children live their own dream. The brave rises above the negativity and soars high. Beautifully written Kathryn!
