Grand Larceny

What’s it take for women to hate their first born so long and so cold? Sly smiles as he choked on the bait. You sat in that one church so bold, Blind and deaf to Love’s story told. Among serpents in pews hearts won, you died unbroken, mute and sold, in how you treated your own son. A father’s heart chipped out of slate. Your measure given is twofold, to regret forever too late, brimstones are all that’s left to hold. Your neglect was poured and it rolled eighty-three years under the sun. The Great White Throne decree behold, in how you treated your own son. How his innocence you both ate, An orphan made in constant scold. No mercy in your ways or fate. In Matthew you read he foretold, hypocrite’s wages to be tolled . The grave’s sleep keeps remorse undone, your legacy as I grow old, in how you treated your own son. If I am to breathe Heaven’s air, your first grandson, when life is done, I don’t expect to see you there, in how you treated your own son. --------------------------------------------- Contest: Not Your Average Ballade Sponsor: Catie Lindsey 04.15.14 My change is my rhyme scheme : 'ababbcbC ababbcbC ababbcbC dcdC'

Congrats on this truly great poem, touched me personally my friend- as it describes so well how my mother treated me as a child(the middle child of thirteen born her). I felt every stab and cut you portrayed in your great write..A7.. By the way, truly forgave my Mom only about ten years ago.. Wish I had much sooner..

I finally saw your comment to my questions. Wish you had emailed me it! I just happened upon it, Rob. They sound somewhat like my husband's parents. Miserable people.

Beatrice: Always knew the Queen was this way, but thought the old man was different, until recently. This hate is new and vary rare for me. I usually forgive easily. I know I will have to let it go, because the God I believe in, demands it. And because, like your husband knows, forgiveness is freedom. Your marriage must be incredible with such a soul. The write has helped. Thank you for visiting and your gracious comment. Yours, Puck.

Hey there, I have a soft spot for Ballads. Yours was visceral in the best of ways. I read your honest reply to Andrea's question. Remember I said my husband is a good man? He grew up in a home like you describe, bad physical abuse. He not only forgave the abuser, but found him a nursing home, visited him weekly, forgave him. My husband teaches me who I could be... I don't say to forgive. I am only saying I'm in awe of people who do it and do it well. Sad smile, Beatrice...did the write help?

Andrea: I am the first grandson. They loved my aunt & uncle. I asked my father why, he has no clue, he said they were always this way. At the door of their death, there was no remorse. These two reprobates crucified their own son without cause and jeopardized my mother, my sister and me. Every nail they drove into him, bleeding out his childhood, they will swallow & pass, gorging on this feast forever, gutting themselves. This is the hardest test of forgiveness I have ever been tasked with.

He sounds like a very hateful man, Rob. Good way to describe him. I am thinking you are the first grandson? This is not fictional, is it? This could easily describe some people I have known, who have alienated all those who could have given them love and respect if they had not trampled those things. I hope you do well in the contest. This was quite a challenge and you were brave to take it on! (I need to try it too!!)
