In memory of my basset hound, Sadie 2000 - 2013

I still miss you, old girl

By The back Door I find Her chipped red bowl Sunk into cold mud Cupping my hands, I hold Gently, my last piece of her I think she knew, that gray morning Putting her nose on my lap to say Goodbye - but I, distracted by jobs and Chores, left her asleep on her frayed blanket I returned too late and she was gone A decade past, but I still cry Dusty tears for yesterday Yet when I lift my face Through silver cracked clouds I can glimpse her Paw prints on Heaven's Grass 2/18/22 E Forms - Etheree contest Sponsor: Constance La France First Place

Wonderfully written poem, Michelle. It's so hard to lose someone close like family, whether a family member, human or pet, or a friend. It's nice to remember them from time to time. The times they were with you and the part they played in your life. Sorry for your loss. Hugs, Bill

Okay - that one brought tears to my eyes. Wonderfully done Michelle. Superb images of the bowl, the frayed blanket, "paw prints on Heaven's grass" all masterfully blended together. This brought memories of losing our previous Wheaten, Ted. We knew he was getting ready to leave us. I put him on his ratty old pillow that he wouldn't give up. Turned around and he was gone. My heart aches for those who lose a beloved friend! Blessings! P.S. - three weeks later Paddy bounced into our lives.

Oh, Michelle - I cried over this one. I've had to say goodbye to so many. And, now one is going blind, to add to my tears. Your poem is so very, very beautiful. I'm facing it.

How can one not shed a tear when a long time friend like Sadie passes into the next world? This is touching and beautiful in all the right ways, and the red bowl adds a layer of tangible reality to touch and hold onto, with a physical connection to Sadie. Love it, I predict a winner ~ John

Thank you so much, Anil, I think if we just take care of each other, and nature, a little better, so much could heal~

Michelle... I really can relate to this one. It brought tears to my eyes. I just lost Louie (a schnauzer - see my poem) last November. He was truly my best friend. The pain is tough....and doesn't go away easily. Thank you for this heartfelt poem of loss. "Glimpse her paw prints on Heaven's grass" - I truly understand.

Hi Michelle, You've penned such a heartfelt tribute to your dear pet. When I lost my dog Big Red many years ago it was as though I was losing a family member. From reading this well-written verse, I could tell how much Sadie meant to you. Well done. Best wishes in the contest. Have a nice day and weekend-Alexis

What a lovely tribute to Sadie! It resonates for me, my little dog, Phoebe who lived 14 years. Your poem so beautifully expresses:"cupping my hands, I hold gently, my last piece of her"... I did the same thing. It is heartbreaking but as you also said:I can glimpse her paw prints on heaven's grass.....Oh, how it warms my heart. Thanks for sharing. Good luck in the contest. :)Paulette
