Dreams

Hazy visions, fragmented scenes persons, places, events, jumbled in erratic sequence, erased from memory in consciousness. Fears elevated, desires crystallized surreal expressions of the subconscious drifting away like mist, the veil lifted on awakening. Deeper still, future events revealed by God, as in the life of Joseph, the teller of dreams, and Isaiah the prophet, “Deep from the earth you speak. From low in the dust your words will come. Your voice shall come from the ground, like the voice of a ghost, and your speech shall whisper out of the dust.” What do they portend, these unbidden dreams, flung into our thoughts as we sleep unaware? Are they messages? If so, what is their purpose, and who is the messenger? How to discern the origin of the voices we hear? We must determine the source of the message. We must listen, always, for the voice of God. “For those who will not hear the instruction of the Lord . . . they shall be like a dream a vision of the night as when a hungry man dreams he is eating and awakes with his hunger not satisfied, or when a thirsty man dreams he is drinking and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched.” “For those who honor God with their lips, and draw near with their mouth, while their hearts are far from Him. Their wisdom shall perish their discernment shall be hidden like the words of a book that is sealed.” “And in the last days . . . your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams . . . “ Genesis 40 & 41 Isaiah 29, Acts 2:17, RSV
