Dream
I reach for you in the night.
The indentation of your body was all that is left.
The bed is empty but I have the memories.
Your joy couldn't be quenched by a promise.
The table was set and the meal waited.
My word was final as you packed.
But the food was cold and empty.
And the vows were too.
I didn't believe you when you told me.
Driving you to the airport and the dam breaking.
Our song was playing but the music was silent.
I searched with my strong song.
But you had already changed the station.
I loved you and in a clean way.
And the moat that you dug was deep.
The water protected and so did your pride.
I swam with heart and the tide pulled but you watched.
We came too soon.
