Daisy

Oh, I remember Daisy from my youth. Memories filled with joy, and that’s the truth. I never knew a calf could be so sweet. She smelled like clover in the summer heat. I threw my arms around her, hugged her tight. Her mother had been stolen in the night. She cried for her the way a calf will do. Then she listened hard for her mama’s moo. I knew she wanted mama's milk real bad. She sucked my little hand, that's all I had. I loved that little calf with big brown eyes. We'd meet each morning as the sun would rise. I came home from school on my saddest day. My step-dad had taken Daisy away. Sometimes I remember how hard I cried. And sometimes still, I brush a tear aside. I think that I was seven at the time. To have a pet like Daisy was sublime. 4-25-21 Rhyming Couplets~5th Place Premier Contest~ Contest Judged: 5/25/2021 10:27:00 PM Sponsored by: Janice Canerdy |

Very cute.... ! To have a pet is lovely... to lose it is sickly. I had a most loved dog. When it died, it plunged me into gloom for several days. I can imagine your pain of losing Daisy at a tender age

This is so sweet. I remember how the calves would come and suck your hand and come running when you came to the pasture. Always was hard to see them go. Nicely written Connie. love phyl

You are one grand poet., Connie. This so so beautful. I get attached to animals easily. I like simple Poetry. And far from my. childhood. Am sure The Bard used couplets, hardly for children. The couplet form is a way to get a point across fast and with power. I loathe Poems that drone and on, saying Absolutely nothing... Hugs, Pangie xx

You honor me with such a wonderful comment Pangie. My granddaughter loved this one because she could understand it. She made me read it to her three times. That says a lot coming from a nine year old. : ) Thank you very much my friend. Blessings, Connie xxoo

oh darn it, she must have later been killed. I guess the lesson is not to get attached to farm animals. You made Daisy sound wonderful!

She was wonderful Andrea. My sister had her twin calf she named Domino. Twins for me and my twin. We both fell in love with those calves. I don’t want to think about them being killed. Thank you. xxoo

Connie, Nice to see you back in the Soup and writing. So little you can do at seven, yet so much felt and seen. Once the responsibilities of adulthood arrive, fondly remembered. -Richard

Oh what a sad memory. I would get attached to animals on the farm when I was small too . It always hurt to see them taken away or something worse. God Bless my friend. JB

Thank you Judy. When you raise animals you often have to eat them which is heartbreaking. That is probably why I am pretty much vegetarian now. Thank you my friend. Blessings xxoo

Thank you very much John. I am slowly returning whenever my muse visits. Having Daisy as a pet made me always adore cows. My twin sister named her calf Domino as it was a male. We both retain fond memories of our pet calfs while we had them in our lives. Have a wonderful week my friend. Blessings xx

Hello Connie ... it is very hard to part with farmyard pets but they do grow into large animals that without fear of humans so they can be destructive but this doesn't alter the fact that we love them to death - thank you Connie - Lindsay

Any animal as a baby can be such a cute loving pet, I am sure i could love a baby calf also, a baby goat is also cute, a lamb or a piglet. I enjoyed this poem immensely Connie, sorry about daisy, maybe what you need is a puppy or a kitten to cuddle. you have your beautiful family but when they go home the puppy or kitty will stay. Be well my kind friend, hugs and blessings, Jennifer.
