Consciousness
At my tender age, my grandma will tell nice stories from scripture,
Each story carried a message, be virtuous and do not be ignorant,
I did not know, what sin was,
She emphatically told, two sins, don’t lie and steal, you will go to hell.
While growing up, my mama said,
Don’t be envious or jealous in your life,
Some people will be richer than us, some friends will be brighter than you,
Do your work diligently, you will see the results.
My dad was very strict,
When I got mad and abusive,
I got disciplined and got good advice,
Control your anger with patience and calm,
When the emotions subside, you will make new friend.
My uncle was friendly and inspiring to me,
He wanted me to be pride for our family,
His advice was, take pride in your actions,
Have humility, do not put anyone down.
My older sister saw me devouring dinners all the time,
Her advice was, do not be a glutton,
If you eat sensibly, you won’t get fat and look ugly,
Pretty soon girls will be looking at you, they like slim and smart guys.
As I was growing in my adult life,
My elder brother will see lust in my eyes,
His advice, take your time, control your temptations,
Time will come, you will enjoy your dreams,
Don’t stop dreaming as the evolution has to evolve.
My middle school teacher saw greed in my acts,
Greed to tell a lie to get ahead of other,
Greed to steal or defraud other of wealth and success,
Her advice, greed does not pay, it will back stab you in future.
At work, i will experience some prejudice all the time,
It did not bother me, I did not fear,
Did my work and helped others to do theirs,
Helped me a lot, while others were getting laid off, I always had my job.
