"Reflections on the Important Things"

Recital by Line Gauthier

Listen to poem:
to walk in early morning's still to see the silence through the chill to smell the rise of dawn from night to hear the sky's unravelling light to taste the distant fields of grass to breathe the dry stone walls that pass to touch the earth's pure pristine air to catch the world - and hold it there.

Beautifully and meaningfully expressed, and with unique word choices. The freshness of it brings the reader "right there."

Thank you Carol. I always tell myself that if a reader feels that 'they are there' in any of my poems then it is 'mission accomplished' :) I truly appreciate your comments. Cheers - Gary

the simplicity is simply overwhelming....such a gentle walk in heavy meaningful boots....and each corner demands a pause along this journey.... mindfulness on a walkabout in meditation....herein why philosophers are panjandrums...loved it

Thanks Timothy. I appreciate your comments as I often find it's not simple keeping poems simple while trying to convey a message / meaning / story. I've learnt a new word today: 'panjandrums' and I love that word. :) Cheers - Gary

Gary, this is very ethereal writing, and quite beautiful. I love how each of the senses is vectored in a new direction, with the eyes seeing the silence and the ears hearing the sky's unravelling light. To wish these magical moments would simply freeze in time is a very human desire, and perhaps why artists and poets commit themselves to capturing that feeling to store away in a bottle for future enjoyment. As always, I love the attention you pay to cadence and rhyme... a FAV. Admiringly ~ John

It's a great poem even if you hadn't made the switch, but doing so is what made this poem sublime, in my humble opinion. You are in good company: Paul Simon once sang "The sky was yellow and the grass was gray", and Paul McCartney sang "I've got my head on the ground and my feet in the clouds". I guess I'm just attracted to topsy-turvy writing, lol.

Thanks once again John for your great comments. They read like poetry themselves. :) Originally I didn't have the senses mixed up so I heard the silence and saw the sky etc but then thought: "What the heck? I want the the senses to sound as if they are over stimulated, over excited and working overtime ..to the point where I ended up with the poem as it stands! :) Cheers - Gary

L. J. sometimes people write comments that just leave me silent. Yours is a case in point. You're so right: the highest compliment any poet can write is that they wished that they had written it themselves. Thank you so much for your wonderful words and all the best for The New Year. Cheers - Gary
