Bells

From near and far I hear the bells their clear tones ring an ancient hymn from long ago, ‘oft sung by men in long white robes, at belfry’s end. I hadn’t heard those bells for years for I had wandered far from home their simple notes from long ago were soon forgot, my soul grew cold. Now came the joyous bells again with no avoidance on my part they resonated in my heart and from them I could not depart. A rising reverence overtook my weariness, for in their sound the bells reached inwards, all around restoring faith, where none was found. With plaintive chimes, the tolling bells entreat me to believe and come before His throne, to praise the One who bought me with His precious Son.

Laura, congratulations on your placement in my contest! I can feel the touching tones as described. “from long ago, ‘oft sung by men in long white robes, at belfry’s end.” “I hadn’t heard those bells for years.” Comes the joyous bells again, warming you all over, restoring your faith. ~ Kim

Laura, I just love how you use the emblem of church bells to draw the reader into the deeper soul terrain of one's faith being renewed. God's Spirit can use so many avenues to bring restoration: the words of a hymn, the sight of a steeple, the smell of incense, the taste of communion elements. In this case, the one who "traveled far from home" hears the bells of childhood that "resonated in my heart". As Tom mentioned, these lines have impeccable cadence, which to me always represents carefully crafted thought. Beautiful, and a Fav for me. Love it! Hugs ~ John

I'm not much for church bells but I'm all in for good poetry. The cadence is is remarkable, I picked up on it right away. And as per usual your faith is evident
