An Innocent Child
On a bench under a shade tree,
A woman sat who could not see.
Beside her a man who could not speak.
A young girl came who appeared meek.
She softly asked the man, “Am I pretty?”
He pointed to the woman without sight.
The girl said, “I want to be polite, but how can she be right?
What answer can I find? You can see, the beautiful woman is blind.”
She asked the woman, “Can you tell me if I was unkind?”
Her reply, “Go ask the man and have him tell you.”
The child was confused and did not know what to do.
She thought if he cannot talk, how can he reply?
Then sat next the two and did not know why.
She sat peacefully there, then said with a plesant smile,
“I would like to sit by you two for a while.”
The woman spoke, “I think you are a pretty child,
You are so caring and your manner seems mild.”
The man shook his head to say, that he too felt the same way.
