Sunflower

Last year,we bought a sunflower,
a cheery little fellow
it had such a deep brown heart,
and petals, sunny yellow,

It makes me smile to think of it,
because we didn't know,
that if you feed and water them,
well, they begin to grow!

now, I don't mean a little bit,
please, let me tell you why,
the last time that we measured,
it was twenty two feet high!!

alas, it could not take the strain,
and, with a sudden frost,
on a cold September morning,
It's fighting spirit lost,

Both I and my granddaughter
wept all that September,
for poor old "sunny sunflower"
a valued family member!

The Garden

The gate through which I enter stands full wide,
Welcoming the visitor as though with silent pride,
"Come look at me" it seems to say " if you
                   have time to while away,
If you enjoy a quiet day, or if you need to hide",

"If you should need to be alone to weep,
or speak aloud a secret you must keep,
Come, sit within my corner's nook, in
                    solitude,to read your book,
For time, it is so swiftly took, before the need for sleep".

Loving Two Men

When you said goodbye
And left me at the station,
I tried hard to smile
As I ran into his arms,
Though, I will miss you, daddy.

My Birthday Garden

In a corner of the garden
where the honeysuckle blooms,
where the air is sweetly scented
with a mixture of perfumes,
High above me in the willow
sits a snow white turtle dove,
who sings his wife a ballad
to celebrate their love,
I watch the evening sun create
such colours in the sky,
almost as if to imitate
the rose trees just nearby,
In this corner of the garden
all my birthdays should be spent,
for the gifts that live around me
are most truely heaven sent.

La Luna....Goddess of the Moon

I dreamt one night, of a beautiful sight,
a creature, as pale as the moon,
She came to my bed, emblazoned in light,
so bright, I could not see my room,

Her skin was so soft, with a luminous glow,
her long hair, a silvery white,
but it was her eyes that would not let me go,
though I fought,( not as hard as I might!),

She lay beside me, her breath cooled the air,
smiling, she whispered her name,
Oh Luna!, sweet Luna!, what you did wasn't fair!,
now my life, it just isn't the same!

Now when I lie here, it's not easy to sleep,
for, I've fallen in love in my dreams!,
La Luna, my lover, is the secret I keep,
and she's never as cold as she seems!.

Ode To a Rose

Sweet rose,my eyes do not believe
the vision that they now perceive,
Around the corner I did come,
along the path, toward my home,
When, looking up, I met a sight,
that filled my heart with pure delight,
Your beauty caught me in it's grasp,
now, I can only look and gasp,
For you were created, oh, loveliest flower,
within mother nature's most finest hour!.

Cock Robin and Horatio

Pray sit a while, while I relate this christmas tale for you,
as told to me by a dear dear friend, (I believe it almost true!)
Imagine, by a cottage wall, a snowman stands, forlorn,
made by busy childlike hands, early that very morn,
Alighting on a nearby tree, my friend Cock Robin came,
he knew he had been there before, for everthing looked the same,
"Horatio!" the bird did cry, at the sight of his old old friend
"my dear old man, a twelvemonth's past, and still you do not bend?"
Alas, dear Robin is unheard, at least that's what he fears,
"perhaps my friend Horatio has lost his snowy ears!"
And so he perches nearer by to let the snowman see,
that 'tis Cock Robin he would spy, (if only he would see!)
Horatio turns not left nor right, he does not make a sound,
and poor Cock Robin must decide to stay and stand his ground!
"What jest is this Horatio?, for I know it is thee!",
" I know your eyes, I know your coat, with black coal buttons three"
" and though it has been many month's, you must remember me!"
Yet still the snowman looks ahead, Cock Robin thinks him rude,
"I shall away" the bird did say "from your haughty attitude"
Then, all at once the big church bell began it's midnight chime,
to call all souls to praise the lord, for it is Christmas time!,
"Horatio! Horatio! it is the magic night!",
the bird then darted here and there and sang with all his might!'
For, on the ground the snow white man began to dance with glee,
singing songs of Christmas cheer, and whistling merrily!.

King Henry's Lament For His Third Wife.

As the winds turn biting cold,
and, as green leaves turn to gold,
a cloak of velvet I would fold
around your form, your grace,

With each step on icy ground,
with each heartbeat's hollow sound,
a hood of swansdown I'd place round
your pretty, pale, sad face,

Would that I could end this pain,
hear your laughter ring again,
dance with you, my dearest Jane,
and bring you from this place.

Hasten Summer Hasten!

Hasten Summer, Hasten!,
come swiftly back to me,
come hollyhock and rose bush
come lovely picnic tea,
come gentle breeze,
come apple trees
come busy bumble bee,
Oh hasten summer hasten!
come swiftly back to me.

Hasten Summer, Hasten!
come swiftly back to me,
come lemonade, and rose hip wine,
come lime and strawberry,
come carriage rides,
come happy brides,
come weekends by the sea,
Oh hasten summer hasten!
come swiftly back to me.
