Winter's Shadows

Why does a winter day often cast Upon its grey streets thoughts of the past Sunshine, we gaily thought would never fade Laughter and lightness, promises made Why does life often take a wrong turn Why does it take a lifetime to learn Endings are, at their best, always sad Goodbyes are the worst: incurably bad I realize Spring's flowers are very near Robins will fly in with new songs to hear But in Winter's shadows our memory hides And in its stark echos sadness abides
