Toy Soldiers
How I loved my toy soldiers,
When we were but mere boys
To me the greatest fun,
The very most favorite of all toys
So innocent I played
Slaying, death, unknown to me
Was still the Civil War,
The Blue and Grey I see
The cannons with their pellets
Explosions in my mind,
Little did I realize
There was another kind....
Where death was real
Agony overcame heroics
The cavalry charges were all too true
The was little but vast carnage,
Between the Grey and Blue
And musket-balls found their flesh
Tearing life away
Bayonnets found their mark,
Life in such a wartime,
Is not a toy filled lark
Let's hope there are no
new playsets,
To remember more new wars
We must one day learn our lesson
It's all a wasteful sin
It's time we let peace reign
And let the healing to begin.
