TOO HIGH A PRICE TO PAY
With the results of this election…the majority of people think I shouldn’t be sad
after all, they say, we only disagree politically!
This was democracy in action, they add, we voted for the changes we want to see.
But that is not what makes me sad…what has crushed my spirit and broken my heart…
It’s watching how this election has torn our county apart.
It’s how the values I grew up with are being trampled and replaced…
how books are being banned and entire histories erased.
It’s how kindness, love and compassion…
the traits I believe contributed to making this country great
have been preempted by hostility…by cruelty and hate.
I know we all have our own vision of what makes our country great…
but what breaks my heart is how so many people voted
for a man who ridicules, who lies and who humiliates.
How when so many people heard and saw his hate first hand..
they smiled, they cheered…they nodded…
how every time he spewed his hate…they stood up and applauded.
Stomping on human rights…making people in our country live in fear…
sending out messages of hate…
you will never convince me this is what makes a country great.
But this is the America most of you voted for…
I understand…the majority has spoken…
but our differing values…
not our differing politics
is the reason my heart is broken.
In my opinion the heart of our county hardened…this last election day
And although I know most of you don’t agree with me
I think for this…or any victory…
that is too high a price to pay…
