The Doppelganger Effect
Something extremely wicked tears
at the very fabric and nature of his form.
Where he yearns hopefully for a small piece of demented sleep
but his mind lies stripped and bare before the storm.
How does one combat such an insidious evil
where the Beast's powers are as useless as a flood?
Is this his tragic end? Does Death call and beckon to him?
A coldness runs and dances through his blood.
He has ruled this ill begotten land as Master and Lord
and now in this twilight will suffer from Nature's blow.
The Beast has hesitation and an unrelenting doubt for the first time.
Can he even win? Can he survive such a heinous foe?
The night moves far too quickly for him
knowing the final battle will temper with the sun.
The first rays of a most unwanted day
begin to flow. They will wake his nemesis, the Demonic One.
He steels himself for mortal combat
with a final Crusade to save a most precarious Throne.
A fool hardy vain attempt to cling to a dying power
that has been his for a millennium and his alone.
Over the years many misguided pretenders have come forward
to challenge him and received all that they deserved.
Where none have survived as they were unceremoniously vanquished
and sent bitter and destitute to whatever God they serve.
But the time was nigh and the hand of Death
rests on his shoulders with the weight of an unwanted curse.
He journeys to a barren field for a most unwinnable battle.
Would he suffer a painful death? Or something even worse?
The Beast arrives with no reasonable expectation
to survive but a fervent hope to die so gloriously in the fight
where the Archangel himself will weep and turn away in shame
as the Beast enters Heaven in a wave of shimmering light.
And there...ten paces away stands the Demonic One.
Was he eager for the kill? Would he toy with the Beast?
The Beast would not wait but lunged angrily forward
to strike first and hard...hoping to inflict a wound at least.
But the Demonic One was too quick and seemed to eagerly rejoice
as they crashed together with the Beast falling dazed to the mat.
Where waiting for the final death blow...he hears a Human's voice.
'You just attacked a mirror...You're such a silly cat.'
