Stone Circles At Castlerigg
Silent the weathered stones in circles stand
Where, side by side, their ancient spirits sleep.
Sentinels that harsh time’s ravages withstand
And through long centuries their secrets keep.
With reverence and unknown purpose placed
By folk who discerned spirits in those stones
Though we, with poor imagination graced,
See pagan alters, sacrifice and thrones.
Monoliths that in timeless vigil wait,
Moss cloaked, erected in long ages past
The return of faded cultures await,
And oft their shadows in warm sunlight cast
As those age old spirits in darkness sleep
Mysteries in unbroken silence keep.
