Serabit El-Khadim
Beloved of Ba’alat,
Consort of Ba’al,
Mistress of the Sinai mines
Whose turquoise eyes
Unlocked the hieroglyphs
Lining the promenade
Leading to the Temple of Hathor,
Inventing first an alphabet,
Then a song to sing in Canaan,
Prompting gossip and rumors
From Memphis to Kush,
Echoing famously now
In Serabit el-Khadim.
