Road To Tomorrow
Caravans past
only smooth memories
with countless feet
trod hard this road
Faintly radiating gentle heat
as I travel forward
Though it seems invincible impervious
to both cruel and gentle weather
through experience I can recognize
Some travelers have toiled
to skin off layers of pavement
made hard by precedent
They would change the way
clearly with no right
(it is my road now)
to conform it to their liking
Many have, selfishly unsatisfied
with free protected passage
succeeded in changing this road
redirecting it for me to follow
Like a sheep I am herded always forward
steadily nudged onward yet gently
by caring, even protective shepherds
Mileage signs simply stereotype
They read eleven miles
no more, no less
Am I a reproduction of every other traveler
who has reached this point
But I am different
Never focusing sharply resolutely
On the road ahead
I have pulled over for a time
stopped and enjoyed springtime sun
on my cold pale shoulders
After all it is the Spring
On a picnic in a roadside field
grass gives way under my feet
keeping an impression
even after I leave
I know that turning towards Heaven
and appreciating clouds' countenance
is needed as well
Soon even too soon
as this paved road ends
I will be ready for new roads
New journeys to small towns and big cities
These new roads
though gray and hard never understanding
Are green as the grass
that enticed and prepared me for this
