Rainbows Dreaming of Gray

Scrambling tooth and nail for a patterned fate I approached the lofty mansion of Learning's Gate. All cued up for a slip of paper - the one they call Degree, halfway convinced that I hallucinated humanity. For who under their own free will would venture into this spiraling sameness: this illustriously-in-debt, this Regal Club of the Nameless? I bellowed my voice into the air (This great atrocity!). But not a single student seemed to care: So well fashioned they were, adorned in their prized medals of mediocrity. Along with their unwillingness to ever stray, all too content to be but rainbows dreaming of gray. I hung my head in such morose emptiness. As I fashioned myself: the uniquely ubiquitous. And what a fool I was to join the crowd - and yet so halfheartedly. Striving for the cirrus clouds, the silver moon, and then the galaxy. For my actions didn't match my cerebral creativity I was statue still cursed with a meandering mind (and other such extremities). Exploding with hopes large enough for two I sat clearly convinced languid leaps would do. But one cannot daintily decide to dream the Dream for it is merely the seed, another earthly deed. You're not allowed to walk away, gandering as it grows, for we are likened as the summer sun - keeping the rivers a'flow. "Picturing profits in your hands do not till the all too ready land" explained the elderly gent with leathered palms, "Someday soon you will understand." And though we aim to be ourselves gravity inevitably brings us to the grid. Imagination like a heavy rain; we the paper people so helplessly hid. But fear not ye denizens of the cherished cubbyhole: where you keep under lock and key your dust-laden soul. If one burgeoning blunder tore it all asunder surely one single spirited spark could heal even the most dormant of hearts. So fare thee well oh Cookie Cutter Coop - Another day on that wretched plain, and I'd surely die. I'm glad just to sever sameness in one fell swoop by hanging on a star in the midnight sky. NOTE: I always enjoyed using alliteration when I could... and with this particular one I went a little bit nutty... but I think it turned out okay.

Nutty is good. Love this poem!! So many memorable lines... I like this moment - "And what a fool I was to join the crowd - and yet so halfheartedly. Striving for the cirrus clouds, the silver moon, and then the galaxy."...nicely done..and "For who under their own free will would venture into this spiraling sameness: this illustriously-in-debt, this Regal Club of the Nameless?" Don't settle for less than the best!! The voice of your poetry passionately and powerfully shines. Always, Laura

Thanks again Laura! This poem was inspired by a picture I saw once: it showed a trove of kids, in rainbow colors, going through Public School and coming out gray! It made me think of how institutionalized education can rob of us our color, and the irony of working hard to achieve less. Appreciate you leaving your super feedback!

Re-visiting this poem. My husband and I never went to University but went learnt a profession in careers that we chose -me as a nurse and he as a fitter and turner. We both loved to read and learn and we have continued a lifelong education of ourselves. I think people can build a life without a college Ed in many cases. Self learning builds Character. SuZ

Very true, Suz! More important to understand the life lessons first and foremost :) This is one of my more "imagination pieces", as I've never actually attended college or University either! It has it's place, but for me, it sounds like a colossal debt ... I tend to think that people's potential are much higher, once you figure out where your passion lies.

I so completely relate to this. The struggles I had making plans on what to do after graduating High School. One parent telling me I had to go to get a "better education and job" while the other said I'd be fine. Truthfully, there has been many people who didn't go to college and through hard work has made it to the top. College is not always the "right thing" shadowing works too. There's so many options for different people, not everyone having to be the same thing. It's what makes us unique.

Exactly! Sometimes that "piece of paper" doesn't even get you what you may exactly want. Anyway, I have plenty of time I'm sure. I may try next year, but I don't think a year without college is going to kill me, contrary to my family. Ha.

Agreed! For some the college life suits them to a tee. But in my opinion... the idea of getting a "degree" to show that you're intelligent is a bit artificial and arbitrary. My opinion of it might change if I ever attend college in the future... but for now it is what it is. Thanks for reading and your insightful comment, Caleah :)

If people approach learning with that perspective that will be exactly the result. University does not provide all the answers but instead helps people form the questions and provides the with tools to help discover the answers. There have been many people without formal education who have gone on to achieve greatness so I know there are different ways.

I can see what you're saying. I suppose what I don't like is the people that have that attitude where if you don't attend college you'll never amount to anything... it isn't the only way to become successful :)

You are gifted my friend. I personally would loved to have had the university experience. The cubby hole approach is determined by the partaker of the experience. I believe for many university leads to the expanding of minds and possibilities. By exposing people to new ideas they can imagine beyond their borders. Both my wife and son embodie this principle.

I totally agree with you on news ideas and minds expanding. But whenever I think of college I think of a bunch of creative people being forced into a mold. I think of people getting into massive debt so they may work for someone else... I think of people being taught WHAT to think and not HOW to think... but that probably isn't the same everywhere. I'm glad you enjoyed my poem, Rick!
