Our Garden
Seated at my desk
looking out into our garden
branches spread, giving dappled shade
a beautiful tree stands sentinel
a tree that we planted as a sapling
along with a few others
saplings one and all
many years ago
also planted
were lawn, bushes and shrubs
flowers, vines, creepers, seeds and bulbs
which we watered, loved and nurtured
some, admittedly
did not make it
but those that have
embrace us and give freely
of their colour, scent and shade
of their flowers, fruit and berries
but above all
of their love and companionship
that forges within us
a deeply grounded sense of belonging
of being home with old and trusted friends
friends who care
friends who matter
looking out at that tree
I know that it is looking back at me
and it knows
as I know
that we see each other
that we have a few tales to tell
of our time together
in this beautiful, friend-filled garden
I also know
that that majestic tree
is smiling at me
because I am sitting here
filled with peace and gratitude
as happy as a clam
as content as a kitten
looking back at it
grinning like a loon.
