Oh, Those Nightmares
There's demons lurking inside
at every twist and turn,
And so many memories
in ashes or yet to burn.
A glance into the future
comes through dreams which have been crushed,
And on the roads to freedom
those dreams wallow in the dust.
Nightmares arrive on the tides
which wash footprints from the sands;
There will be no pathways clear
that lead to the freedom lands.
From time to time lights appear,
they've come through the midnight cloud,
Bringing echoes from afar
and from those screaming out loud.
The magician's long been dead
for now there will be no cure,
Not even the far off king
can offer words that assure.
The last queen had disappeared
in the midst of an affair;
Of her ghostly followers
there are very few that care.
If, like me, you wake in dark
on a dreary moonless night
And see the shadows dancing
in a much frenzied delight;
There's not much that you can do
underneath the blankets deep,
The best that you can hope for
is at last they'll let you sleep.
When at last the sun comes up,
though you're weary to the bone;
You know full well through the night
you were never left alone.
Enjoy these daylight hours,
they'll feel far and few between,
For the nightmares will return
like movies already seen.
