Not To Wonder
years have passed and time slipped by
I don’t want to sit and wonder why
what have I not done but meant to
am sure somewhere I have a list to do.
ticks of the clock meant very little
but time now is getting brittle
the day ends before I am ready
slow pace and not very steady
I never counted the candles on the cake
but now it looks like a bonfire stake
had a few tv channels in black and white
the anthem would play at midnight
the evening paper was just a dime
my bills were paid ahead of time
never got much in the way of mail
envelopes from Medicare now come in a bail
when the choir sang ‘nearer, my God to thee’
they rose and turned towards me
went to the visiting hours of a close friend
out the way out a sign said see you again
yesterday I needed to go into town
took the wrong train and went out bound
left my car at the station with keys intact
so that I wouldn’t lose them when I got back
last night I saw so many birds in the park
it was really pines cones just after dark
my doctor told me I had years ahead
but asked me to pay him today instead
As I noticed the hands on the cuckoo clock
it will soon be time for the bird to squawk
he won’t have to worry about getting old
someday he’ll be the head of the household
