9/11/2024 for My Favorite Teacher Poetry Contest sponsored by Karen Jones

In my years of school, many good teachers, I've had. In first grade, Mrs. Carver helped me when I was sad. That compassionate beauty was kind to me indeed. I can't recommend a better way to learn to read.  In fifth grade, Mr. Monniger made learning come alive. A great storyteller, sometimes history he'd contrive, but he would always make lessons colorful and fun. He said Van Gogh had two ears, but gave his girlfriend one. My favorite subject in school, however, was math. Mrs. Sherman, my favorite teacher, led me down that path. Tough, yet kind, she was respected and she gave respect. She prepared for class, and from you, that's what she'd expect. She graduated with an engineering degree. How many in her class were women? One, not two or three. She could have made more money doing engineering work, but, she decided, instead, she would teach my kind of jerk. She took an interest in each kid and went the extra mile. With her sharpened sense of humor, you could make her smile. She taught me four classes, starting with geometry, the classes I liked most as I got my high school degree. My college degree was in pure mathematics. Problems and puzzles still put me in ecstatics. In retirement, I tutor math, and I can truly say, I am grateful for Mrs. Kathleen Sherman today.

Thank you for entering my contest and congratulations on your first place win! I found your poem to elegantly embrace various teachers with respect and admiration. I especially enjoyed the giggle from these lines “but he would always make lessons colorful and fun. He said Van Gogh had two ears, but gave his girlfriend one.” It was a pleasure to read!

I'm glad you got a giggle from the Van Gogh line. I like to make myself laugh and it's better if someone laughs with me!

Thanks, Hilda. It's funny how, as a kid, I didn't realize so much how great it is when your main job is just to learn, but, by college I realized what a gift that is.

Thanks for your compliments, Susan. It was a little hard for me to put my finger on why she was good, but I found out later that many of my friends also liked her. Just a few months ago I was in touch with someone who advised her not to be a teacher. She was retired by my 10th reunion way back when, but our class voted one teacher to join us and she was it.

Hello David, I loved your devotion to your favorite teacher and also to math. Unfortunately, when it came to math, there was a teacher who was smart as a whip but had no mercy and somehow, I was one of the ones he put down. However, I had an english teacher who loved my poems and here I am. Well Inked! - Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

It sounds like you're describing my 7th grade math teacher. Glad you had an English teacher to inspire you. I remember in 3rd grade we read Jabberwocky and that was fun, but I was afraid of writing most of my life, even avoiding electives that required writing in college. Now, when I write poems, I think they're inspired by when I was into rhymes: Dr. Seuss lol
