Just a Toking

WELL ME AND BOYS WE’RE SITTING AROUND THE FIRE, AS ALL GOOD GEORGIA BOYS DO. WE WERE DRINKING AND LAUGHING AND CUTTING THE FOOL, AND COOKING SOME GOOD OLD BRUNSWICK STEW. WELL THE NEXT THING I KNOW AND IT CAME AS A SURPRISE, NOT A THOUGHT HAD EVEN ENTERED MY HEAD. OUT COMES A JOINT AND THE SMOKE STARTS RISING, AS THE EMBERS IN THE FIRE STARTED GETTING RED. WELL THEY PAST IT MY WAY AND AS I ALWAYS DID, I TOOK IT AND ENHALD IT RIGHT DOWN. I HELD IT FOREVER AND TRIED TO KEEP IT IN, AND IF I HADN’T HAD TO BREATH, I’D A DROWN. WELL WE TOKED FOR A WHILE AND WE JOKED FOR A WHILE, AS THE STEW KEPT COOKING SO FINE. THEN WE’DE TOKE SOME MORE AND LAUGH SOME MORE, THEN SOMEONE CAME OUT WITH ANNIE GREENSPRINGS WINE. WELL I AIN’T GOTTA TELL YOU WHAT THAT STUFF DOES TO ME, CAUSE ALL MY BUDDIES WILL ATTEST. IT MAKES ME GO CRAZY AND ON TOP OF THE WEED, I GET BOASTFUL AND FLING OUT MY CHEST. I’LL TELL THEM SOME STORIES AND THEY’LL CACKLE AND HOWL, AS ALL CRAZY WOLVES WILL DO. I’LL GET FUMBLE FISTED AND WADDLE AROUND, TILL I TRIP OVER MY OWN LITTLE SHOE. WE PASSED ROUND THE SMOKE, EVEN SHOTGUNNED SOME TIME, AND BOY I WAS FELLING NO PAIN. FIGURED TOMORROW WAS ANOTHER DAY, IT COULD TAKE CARE OF ITSELF, NO GUTS, NO GLORY, NO HURT, NO PAIN. SOON WE WERE PARTING, THE STEW ALL GONE, EACH HEADED OUR OWN LITTLE WAY. WE WOULD ALWAYS REMEMBER AND LAUGH IT OFF, DO IT AGAIN ON ANOTHER DAY. WELL I STARTED MY TRUCK, WE ALL DRIVE TRUCKS DOWN HERE, AND PUSHED IN THE CLUTCH AND LET OUT A SCREAMING TIRE SOUND. SPED OFF DOWN THE ROAD, THEN TURNED IT ABOUT FACE, CAUSE I DIDN’T WANT TO GO INTO TOWN. WHEN I FINALLY GOT HOME, IT SURE WAS A LONG RIDE, MY HEAD STILL SPINNING AROUND. I FUMBLED WITH IN MY POCKET TRYING TO GET MY KEYS, STAGGERING TILL I FINALLY FELL DOWN. THEN IT STARTED TO SPRINKLE, IT FELT PRETTY GOOD, LITTLE RAIN DROPS TIPPY TOEING FROM MY FACE. I SAT THERE A WHILE, CAUSE THE TEMPO WAS RYTHMIC, BUT SUDDENLY IT PICKED UP ITS PACE. WELL PANICKY I TRIED TO FIND THE RIGHT KEY, WITH NO LUCK AND SOAKED TO THE BONE. ITS GONNA LOOK BAD WHEN THEY ALL READING THE PAPER, “MAN DROWNS WHILE TRYING TO GET INTO HIS HOME.” WELL I FINALLY GAVE UP AND LEANED ON THE DOORWAY, AND FELL FACE DOWN INTO MY FLOOR. I HAD FORGOTTEN AS USUAL A MENTAL LITTLE BLOCK, WHEN I LEAVE I NEVER LOCK MY DOOR. WELL I GOTTA QUIT DRINKING AND TOKING SOME DAY, OR IT WILL LEAD ME TO AN EARLY GRAVE. BUT THEN COME TOMORROW EVENING WHEN I’M FEELING BETTER, I’LL TRY ANOTHER DRINK, CAUSE BY THEN I’LL BE BRAVE.
