Jack in the box

I asked Jack, "How can you stand to live in that box? Whiskey on the rocks?” He said, "Nah, it's much more mundane. I simply turn off my brain; then, turn it back on again, when someone else wants me to entertain.

This is hilarious on the surface, but the last line hit different. Poor Jack--just flipping his switch on and off for whoever walks by. Clever and quietly sad. I really felt that.
