It takes earned experience and interaction and validation to validate by an individual if someone is trustworthy. When all the criteria are met by that individual of another. Trust is then felt and any doubt of mistrust is eliminated. Allowing that person to trust and in that comfort of trust a bond of friendship results as you eloquently call the first step. Wisdom written here my friend.
