And so it Goes
Chamber music plays soft
from the far side of the room;
Candles flicker gently
to the beat of the band's tune.
Lovers in the corner
talk of rising for a dance;
They don't want to be seen
but they might just take a chance.
The bartender serves drinks
to men that sit at the bar,
He's not asked for their names
for he don't care who they are.
As long as they will pay
he will serve them all night long,
He knows when the time comes
they'll go home where they belong.
There are empty tables
held for those that did not show;
This will hurt the profits,
but they don't care and won't know.
Sometimes they're short on rent,
sometimes orders aren't complete;
Yet it's just like others
that work hard along this street.
Might not be too long now
before this place shuts the door;
"Business closed" could go up
while the dust gathers on the floor.
Bartenders will find work
on the other side of town;
As for all the drinkers,
another place will be found.
