Flour Doll

Mom made a flour doll with flour and water. There the little doll sat on the dresser all day, with her currant eyes and three-cherry mouth... She liked it in the warm kitchen, but wished Mom would rub a damp cloth over her now and again... She could feel herself getting very dry...

Mom had three children... The kids were close in age, the eldest being four years old. The doll could hear them playing in the adjoining room, but at one o'clock sharp they all came into the kitchen to have lunch. She watched them from the dresser, thinking how nice they all were - the three boys all dressed in red jumpers.

"What's that, Mom?" asked the four-year old, looking up at the flour doll.

"That's Hattie", said Mom, and the flour doll felt so happy she had a name. She couldn't play like Mom's family, but she would have a little life for a day there on the dresser, be proud of her flour and water make-up and be glad to just BE.

I enjoyed reading your story. It's as flour doll is so lifelike. I can visualize a small child at one time peeking into the window of a dollhouse, and now reminiscing.

Julia, a very delightful short story! I especially like the existential nature of the last sentence. It leaves me wondering what the rest of her day will be like. Maybe Mom can introduce her to the Pillsbury Doughboy :) ~Mark
