An Emergency Situation

"I wouldn't try to open the door, if I were you," he warned.

There was a gleaming sign that read "EMERGENCY EXIT." I nodded and crawled back to my shared cell.

I lay in bed thinking. As if I could conjure a dream of escape.

What was beyond? Freedom? Or maybe a void. Either would be better than this.

The sign was still there with I lined up in the morning for breakfast. I was surprised. Surprised no one else had tried to escape.

Or maybe someone had.

My thoughts simmered the rest of the day. I didn't take my phone call that day. Because I was thinking.

"There's going to be rain today," one of Them said. And at that I decided it was best to leave it be.

Becuase I just knew that my family would be at that gate soon enough. And we would dance in the rain like the old days. Then drive off in the protection of the car.

I did promise her I'd be good when she left me.

I heard a scream. A metallic scream. And alarm? And red lights?

They were caught before I could register.

I got good sleep that night.

Knowing I was one day closer to my family.
