I am just curious if I am the only one who cringes when reading other's works and discovering errors in the usage of: to, too, two their, there, they're a, an and other common word usage errors? Am I too uptight about this. Do people want these errors pointed out to them? I know I sometimes make these same mistakes (and others) out of haste and/or sloppiness, but I get the feeling some make these mistakes out of (sorry, can't come up with a better word) ignorance. Is this just me? Just wondering. Don't mean to be overly critical. Thanks for your responses.

I'd always want to know if I made such an error.

Daniel,
I think that if you see an error and want to tell the person you should soup mail them and make it a private thing so that they can change it without it being public in their comments..Just my thoughts..Sara

If anyone, ever sees a spelling or grammar error in my poetry or has an idea how to improve my poem, I would really appreciate hearing about it. But of course, the point must be made in a construction manner. To me this is a learning process. For example, someone suggested to me recently, that I am using "!" too much in my poems, that I should drop the "I's" and my poetry will flow better, trying to do that, and it is very true, the flow is better..

I have to admit, grammar can let me down big time. I would welcome Soup Mails to highlight my errs. I agree with Constance, it will enhance our learning, James.

I have horrible trouble with "s" 's & s'. Also, one of my pet peeves is the over use of "that" it is a meaningless word and in most cases the line is better off without it. Also, which is sometimes more appropriate but I don't remember when LOL. As Connie has said use as few "I's" as possible because 1) who else would it be? & 2) You want the reader to put themselves/..fes?? LOL in the poem.

I do try not to make grammar errors, that is for sure,,and I usually use a spelling checker,,,I have always over used the words (the) (but) and many others my english teacher told me this in school,,so if I make a mistake I would appreciate any feedback even if would happen to be mean,,I have been on poetry sites that are so so very rude and down right evil ,,,I just take it with a grain of salt,,,if they get really crude and obnoxious,,,I just leave and never go back....Blessings..Cecil

I am very new to this site, but, having experienced a certain type of "critique" on other sites, I would not dream of putting anyone in the same position, I am honest, but if a comment is not a fair one then it is not a valid one and should be ignored, nit-picking through a piece of work that a person has put a lot of themselves into is cruel, so I always take time to look beyond simple spelling mistakes, mistakes I can sometimes make myself, and consider the work, and the writer on the basis of their potential.

I was wondering if people sometimes acted as a poetry group, then you do make comments which can be helpful, but it is tricky. You do not want to be harsh. Maybe just comments like check your spelling and/or usage of _____. I watched an instructor do it and she did not often comment on minor errors, people may have just mistyped ( a word?). She would say things like, "I did get stuck here" It was interesting and sometimes you changed something sometimes you didn't. I think there are some good poets here, a whole range of them. So I do learn just by reading poetry here. Take care all

Amen!! I've got a poem in the works which intentionally uses all the words in the wrong way. Your instead of you're is my biggest peeve, with their and there ranking a close second. By the way, I would not point this out unless someone asked for grammatical corrections, but cringe is what I do. Everyone should definitely use the spellcheck to help with the typos. I know I make a lot more errors on my laptop because the keyboard is different. edited by leeanauo on 5/19/2010

I hate to see spelling, grammar mistakes...but, especially, when people start a poetry contest and say: "grammer is not important in judging this contest" This is THE ULTIMATE...

You didn't capitalize "I". You see how typos can happen, the meaning is stil there. Only suggest spell check if it there is a blatant error. Often in poetry, certainly mine, grammar is optional as I invert lines or emit words or even do a play on words. I do that with to, too, and two sometimes in speaking of a relationship of two who need too many words to describe the levels of compaionship, ( ie my Mommy and Me).

Its no matter. Generally thoughts and writing differ from poet to poet. I think, if expression is complete, then there is nothing wrong.

All published work should be spell-checked and checked for grammar, but alas...Yes, its annoying
