For those of you who write fixed verse using rhymes, one trick that's helped me avoid repeating metaphors is by using obscure, difficult end words as rhymes. Words you/others seldom use, words with a limited amount of options, something exotic. It helps force me to think up new metaphors instead of falling into a routine (unconscious or otherwise) of go-to phrases, imagery and ideas. This might only suite styles similar to mine, but give it a try if you get bored.
