READING ALOUD the apex of poetry

Blog Posted:8/2/2021 3:58:00 AM

Reading a poem silently has been compared to aloud  the difference between staring at sheet music and playing the music on an instrument.indeed

...others believe poetry is a vocal art meant to be read aloud.

It is well known I am an advocate of recitation( as my youtube anthology clearly indicates) but  accept that some folk can be content with a silent read.

To me,recitation is the apex of poetry equating poetry to the experience of viewing a painting or touching a sculpture....why so..

.each time the viewer / reciter brings a uniqueness of the moment to the 'happening' & thus the experience can differ each time .

..a byproduct of reading aloud imho, (& as I have found)is, it is a useful learning /editing technique to use  before finalisin g/publishing[posting] the poem ,(especially in our workshop here)& whatever the poem length or its form.

My interest in recitation started here, prompted by an amazing youtube clip by Carrie Richards,(very much a regular here in those bygone days)

Using my laptop, with a mic interface,I made a cd (for posterity)of a selection my endeavours to supplement the family tree/journal,photos etc we produced as a keepsake for when we have passed on.

There is great satisfaction in reading poetry aloud ,especially to an audience,I have done this a few times, reciting my own poetry was a unique one-off,allowing the pauses ,as appropriate ,to add a dimension .

Brian, I agree with you but I have a very soft voice and when I read aloud it does not do my poem justice. But, I am working on that by being part of a poetry reading group and also recording my voice to see how it sounds. I really admire poets who have great poetry reading skill, it really is wonderful to listen to them recite their poetry. Brian, you have a great poetry reading voice ~ serenity and tranquility _Constance

I've added audio to a few of my early poems. Now I am more experienced with writing ( I was a total novice when I joined in 2014) I like to read them out to myself before I post to make sure the meter is ok especially with my limericks:-) hugs Jan xx

There are several online tools which provide easy ways of voicing your text. For example, http://www.fromtexttospeech.com/ & https://ttsmp3.com/ I use these to add voices to the poems I post here. Cheers

I know poets here with the opportunity to go to poetry clubs and read their poems aloud. I remember one of our poets who died a few years ago. He lived in the Big Apple and would write often of being able to read his poetry aloud. Others I have met here have told me similar stories. I think it would be nice hearing our poets from Soup each reading one of their favorite poems for each other at some big event!

they are such a hassle for me to deal with the audio. I know I just need practice at it, but I have no young people at my house to help me and I depend on my students for things I can't understand how to do!!
