Loneliness

Such a finely honed sword is this loneliness
Slicing through tenuous sinews of yesterday.
I search for obscure corridors of happiness
Knowing that somehow I forgot the way.

From gloomy clouds I harvest the sorrow
Dripping into the cupped hands of my heart.
For there is no optimistic promise of tomorrow
As I curse my ship and unintelligible chart.

How bitter sweet this gateaux of quiet solitude
I garnish it with sprinkles of immense silence.
For loneliness is but a mere shift of attitude
From peaceful design to destructive violence.

I gather the jigsaw pieces of empty conversation
Falling snippets swirling on the winds of sound.
A soliloquy of madness expressed in futile oration
In chilling isolation the laughter of my soul is bound.

I strain to catch the words swirling on the breeze
Yesterday was surely a symphony of chatter.
This finely honed sword cuts deeply with ease
And though I bleed... it surely doesn't matter.

Ocean of Sorrow

Since you left I seem to drift
Sorrow's current, very swift
Pulling me beyond yesterday's
Searing pain of velvet stingrays.

In this vast deceiving ocean
I drown in waves of emotion.
On the oily ocean floor of life
I try to dodge its knowing knife.

A tropical depression on my mind
In my fragile nakedness I find,
That memories are the true enemy
Deceiving fronds of the anemone.

In hungry oysters I plant the seed
On every sandy thought they feed.
Mother of pearl coating every care
I wear pearls of grief in my hair.

I explore this endangered coral reef
Your bright fishes touch my grief.
Memories in every detailed hue
Remembering the essence of you.

Are you even aware of the burning pain
Of yearning so much to see you again?
In the whirlpools of my mind
Will I ever sweet closure find?

Under rocks I find glistening tears
To keep as semi-precious souvenirs.
Timeless treasures to sustain tomorrow
As I dive into the ocean of sorrow.

No Mans Land

A brand new development for you and me
A gated community you just have to see.
Situated on the plains of deep despair
A rocky road will lead you there.

Surrounded by lovely weeping willows
Beautiful vistas of the sea of sorrows.
So if you are feeling down and out
This community is what it's all about.

The school of hard knocks will teach you well
The Drown your Sorrows pub is really swell.
And should you crave some company
Why down the street lives Lady Misery.

Soliciting is certainly not allowed in here
Opportunity won't come knocking, have no fear.
Undesirable tenants were the ladies Luck and Hope
Fortunately for us they decided to elope.

The restaurants will only serve the bitter pill
Of humble pie and crow, you can have your fill.
For sport we do have plenty of space
Feel free to enjoy our weekly rat race.

So if you feel depressed and without hope
Why we offer bungi jumping without a rope.
We have taken great care as you can see
To offer our tenants every possible amenity.

So if life has turned its back on you
If you have nothing to lose and feeling blue.
Consider buying your very own stand
In this community called No Mans Land.

City

I follow black rivers in the night
Chase rainbows of neon light.
Far off the lightning plays
Dark stares from dark alley ways.

Sirens wailing in the dark
Police lights down in the park.
My feet pounding the pavement
I latch onto my bereavement.

Maybe if I walk a day or more
I'll reach a blue and peaceful shore.
And as I watch the palm trees sway
The wind and sun and I will play.

But now I am in this dismal place
Tears streaming down my face.
I look up towards the sky
I think I see an angel cry.

So I walk down this black river
Cold night air make me shiver.
Through the concrete I will roam
Because you are no longer home.

Reality Check

I play with sorrow hide-and-seek
For love will hide and I am weak,
And when I locate the pot of gold
I find the rainbow has been sold.

I explore the real life of this fairy tale
The gingerbread house is up for sale.
The frog is not what he proclaims to be
A wolf in grandma's nightie is all I see.

The prince is having a bad hair day
The beauty is not in the beast I say.
The carriage 'till midnight will not last
I'll have pumpkin pie to break my fast.

I climb the beanstalk way up high
Open Sesame I cry and cry,
Look there's a dragon at my door...
I don't believe in fairy tales no more.

So tell the seven dwarfs to stay away
Tell the ogres I don't want to play.
The damsel in distress I'll never be
For I'm the ugly stepsister, you see.

Abused

I withdraw into the dome of only me
Floating unaware through your reality.
Warm and cozy in my zombie state
To the one in the glass I won't relate.

I laugh and dance for I'm insane
Repeat your thoughts although inane.
I'll cheat this life for all eternity
Send my hapless soul to purgatory.

Incessant chatter a barbed refrain
As I swim through the waves of pain.
For all you do is talk and talk
Alone and scared I walk the walk.

Desperately I embrace my own insanity
For all I see in moments of clarity,
I'm not immune nor even above
This horror you call eternal love.

So break the glass and pour the wine
In you empty promises I'll recline.

The Smell of You

I light a candle for you this lonely night
Vanilla scented footsteps from the past.
The smell of your sweater a poignant delight
I wonder how long the memory will last.

Lavender scent to ease the empty pain
Potpourri of emotions in the smoky air.
In honeysuckle flames I see you again
Inhale the smell of aftershave in my hair.

Lose myself in pipe tobacco and peppermint
Barbeque fumes from a long lost yesterday.
Chocolate laughter that tease and hint
Of watermelon wars in the dusty hay.

Coffee memories that taunt and tease
Lost conversations in the smell of brandy.
Dusty morning air after a hard freeze
Your body heat so sweetly handy.

I light a candle for you this lonely night
Vanilla scented footsteps from the past.
Somewhere deep inside it's very tight
I wonder how long is grief supposed to last.

Stairway To Heaven

I'll build a stairway to heavens gate,
Climb the spirals into the great divide.
There your name I'll defiantly state,
I'll wait until they let me come inside.

As I gallop along the streets of gold
Calling your precious name again,
Searching for your bear hug hold,
In my ears your voice a sweet refrain.

I'll search until your silver cloud I find
Until I hear your voice so deep.
Yet again I'll look into your face so kind
Searching for some words to keep.

For the days have been long and cold
Since you left and went away.
Warm embers of love to keep and hold,
Maybe they'll keep the grief at bay.

Luck of the Draw

I roll the dice one more time
One more poker card I ask.
I search for one last dime
Train my face to be a mask.

Luck be a lady tonight
Sinatra singing in my mind.
I clutch the rabbit foot real tight,
Love and happiness I will find.

For life's a roller coaster ride
A simple game of craps,
And just who will decide
Which roads and which maps?

Yet when the final game I play
And I tally up the final score,
King of hearts was not meant to stay
Ace of spades just wiped the floor.

Regretfully I fold my hand
I walk away with a sigh.
Love may be very grand
But the stakes were just too high.

Wheel of Fate

In perpetual slow motion the wheel of fate will turn,
What is given in abundance will surely be taken away.
Leaving only questions of why that scald and burn
When the bill seems so unfairly high to accept and pay.

For the lean will yap on the heels of prosperous fat
A dire warning that silver linings are a one way gate.
For when I blindly come out to take my turn to bat
I'm unaware of the curve ball thrown by fickle fate.

So I bargain with God and Fate and Lady Luck
Omnipotent in some far off nebulous recess.
In rules beyond my understanding I am stuck
A helpless pawn in their intricate game of chess.

For fortune can shatter and turn on a simple dime
I search for meaning in a game I don't wish to play.
In the running sands of my life and remaining time
Illusive hope the only constant I pray for today.

In perpetual slow motion the wheel of fate will turn,
Surely giving back that which has been taken away.
Everlasting hope and despair that evolve and churn
As I drink deeply from the cup of maybe-some-day.
