Our Worlds Collide

I would love to be your comfort
A blanket when you're confused
A bright song on every dark day
Warmth and hope you cannot lose
To be the canopy to cover you
When life's storms come your way
I can be the one you've longed for
Because I see the words you can't say

So let's discard the old frayed sweater
That doesn't fit, it's come undone
You don't need words for my attention

Behind the Smile

Just another sinking tear
In this river full of pain
Racing fast to nowhere
A world that's gone insane
Hope committed suicide
Before I had the chance
Forced to live without you
Teased by fool's romance

But it's alright you'll never know
I'm living dead but I don't show
Empty words and hollow eyes
Behind the smile I hide my lies

Everyone has the answer
None of them are right
The blind lead the blind
Pretending to have sight
Love is such a cruel illusion
A distracting fool's delight
Left me poor and naked
Under a waterfall of night

Note: I wanted to write a break-up song that was so painful.. each line works as a separate, horrific story. And it comes like unrelenting waves rushing over its helpless, loveless victim. And still, this broken soul tries to hide that they've drown in an eternal water grave of rejection, behind a blank, artificial smile. My hope was to create a picture of complete and utter emptiness. Because if you've tasted true love and then lost it forever.. that's how desperately awful it feels!

Now I Lay Me

Now I lay me down to sleep
In my home that's really sweet
Had three large meals and a snack
There wasn't a hint of any lack
Comfortable shoes and clothes that fit
My heart's desires my money can get
Friends and family know my name
So many opportunities it's just insane
Doctors and dentists, heat and air
A hope and a future.. No despair
Little chance I'll die before I wake
But if I do, my soul God will take.

But the homeless orphan goes to sleep
His unbathed body on a filthy street
Sold himself today to get a meal
From a slimy stranger with a dollar bill
No life, no skills, no future, no hope
No family, no friends, no heat, no coat
No shelter, no job, no doctor, no care
No money, no support, no help anywhere
Despair and neglect, a fight to survive
A shell of a child more dead than alive
And if this orphan dies before he wakes
Will he know my God his soul to take?

Note: Just returned from two weeks in Africa. I’ve seen the most amazing and the most tragic sights. This poem/prayer is a contrast of a typical western lifestyle to that of a fatherless orphan. 

PS-I’ve basically been without internet for the past two weeks and have missed reading your poetic works. May you and I never take take for granted all the blessings that we have been afforded!

Note: I wanted to write about feelings so strong, though they be fantasy, there is always the possibility that these feelings can reach over into reality. It's happened to me, so the writer is a believer in the magic of what could be.  I've seen dreams come true.. but could they in a place called, Soup???

Perfect ambiance in this crowded room 
I ask the band to play my favorite tune
Yes, I've seen you over there...
Such beauty.. far beyond compare
You're leaving me breathless 

Your eyes.. how they mesmerize 
That look.. completely irresistible

What would it be like to love you
To know much more than just your name
Your poetic lines are heart magnets
Thoughts of you are driving me insane

What would it be like to hold you
I’d like to dance beneath the moon
And feel your breath upon my neck

Do I even dare to ponder here

One Demo Remaining

Wake up every morning, 
Knowing it will be the same;
Feel an endless longing, 
Inside a rage that can't be tamed.
Haunted in my thinking, 
I let my big chance pass;
And with it all believing, 
That my song would always last.

Invited to 'The Boot' to hear a band, 
Saw a flicker of what I used to be;
A young man lost in his music, 
Yesterday that man was me.
I remember making melodies, 
The world was in my hands;
But it slipped through my fingers, 
I had to grow up and be a man.

Let my hopes just fly away,
All my dreams of entertaining;
Now I'd give any thing to know,
There's still one dream remaining.

Sitting at this restaurant patio, 
The guitar's magic in his hands;
His voice is smooth and effortless, 
Oh how I wish I was that man.
The joy of being lost in the music, 
Alive, young at heart, and free;
The tapping feet and smiling faces,

Let inhibition just fly away,

Note: When I was a young musician I had an old guy in the crowd who was really into our set. On a break, he told me that he was just like me years earlier. But he listened to voices telling him he had to grow up and let his dream go. This song is through his eyes.  Never let anyone take your dreams. They are real. Midnight Hour

Into my dreary days
Rode hope on scented lines
In this pool of darkest deep
So bleak.. only love could find
A world of suffocating stench
Pulls me closer to the abyss
I close my eyes in surrender
Instead of death I feel a kiss 

A simple note scribbled out
Words that touched my soul
Is it enough to quench doubt 
How will the story now unfold
Does she see behind the muse

A narrow path.. could I escape
