4 White Horses

4 White Horses called to me
from across their field on that 1 day
They called my mind to come and see
their everyday scene so...overlooked

The gazes were steady the hearts true
as innocence pulled us together
Their knowledge of my soul was a wondrous feeling of trust...
their warm soft muzzles like velvet in my hands

Though fence between us...
I could feel their wild hearts racing across the plains
Massive white clouds rode the wind past the sun
sweeping shadows over the land like prehistoric birds

The scene calmly arouses memories of peace...of youth...of freedom
I feel a oneness with this land...with this moment...with this dream
I feel a oneness with these creatures so Majestic and Serene

Time could never change their hearts
or even taint their souls
and I could not tear myself away when it was time to go
Deep breath in... Deep breath out
I wished silently that all creatures could be at such peace
on that 1 day

-hope you enjoy this inspiration of a creature that changed my heart

A Greener Pasture

Though my stall here is empty now
If you listen close...
You can hear me running through a greener pasture
Your sorrow opens the gate and releases me free
Thank you for rescuing me from worldly darkness
And giving me love unsurpassed
So that I may now run with others so loved...
But never forgotten
I am a child again young and lean my spirit afire
And oh how our spirits thrive here
Never again to feel the pain of the earth
Hear me running!
For your tears have watered the grasses for me
In God's Greener Pasture

-originally written for Kae Surrah
 an Arab rescue mare

Support Your Local Poet

“Support your local poet please”
Said the man with hand out and down on one knee
I’m down on my luck
And for only a buck
My humble verses will put you at ease

Whatever your pleasure
Whatever your mood
A simple rhyme is sure to soothe
Perhaps a Sonnet or Ballad will do
Or maybe a Limerick for a laugh or two

How about a Couplet or a fine Crystalline
Or is a simple Haiku more your scene?
I’ll sing you a Lyric if you have the time
Or spill out an Ode as sweet as wine

I’m a simple man’s poet
Just trying to get by
So hearken your ear and I’ll tell you no lies
I am what I am no less no more
The words of this soul are an open door
For my tongue is richly blessed though some think me poor

I assure you my friend this isn’t a scheme
Just give me a listen you’ll see what I mean
For words can be such a valuable thing
When they make one think… “perchance to dream”

- This write prompted by the above sticker. I received it from some fellow poets while attending an open poetry night at a coffee house in downtown Flint, Michigan several years ago. It now proudly adorns my guitar case. :)

The Missing Patron

Copper in color and also by name
Was this fuzzy warm patron of canine fame
Wandering the grounds that were right next door
He loved to walk the boards of a little country store

The occasional stranger with
a smile and a treat
And the everyday favorites he waited to greet
A wag and a smile for all who could see...
He was simply God's patron of humanity

He blessed this little place of a little part of life
And now this one corner is a little less bright
Though loss is confusing and painful to man
It's just a tiny part of a great big plan

So look to the skies when they're copper at night
And you'll feel the warmth of a life so bright
Then the comfort will come as you realize more...and more
He now walks the boards of a brighter country store

- for Copper...a loveable old golden retriever

Pieces of Me

Another piece of me falls away
With another one of you who leaves me this day
Sorrow and joy divide my heart

Joy that you are renewed, happy, and safe
Sorrow that I must go on in this place
Without you by my side
Without your watchful eye
Just one small lick your sign of affection
Your paw on my foot your adoring protection
Brighter than any diamond
More comforting than words
The best of the best
Now protects
This piece of me

She joins my other departed friends
Keeping pieces of me until my end
When this fated puzzle will be complete
And the pieces all fit in…

The picture is a monumental friendship…
And never will it end

For the Love of Lippy

For the love of Lippy I've done it all...
And I would do it all again
For my heart, for my joy, for my friend
Oh what a world you got me into!
Some days so long and hard, I thought I'd never make it through
Except for knowing that at the end of the day, I could spend some time with you
We weathered the disasters and wrong choices... mostly mine
But we've reveled in our successes, in our friendship and in our time
So many places, so many changes, what a life we've shared
You've done what I've asked, you've mastered your tasks
And for you I will always be there... as you have been there for me
When my mind is blood red and my heart is stone gray
You stand before me pure white
And your mane dries my tears and your coat soaks in my sorrows
And your eyes always reveal "The Light"
Given to each other by one greater than us who knew what we both would need
Never a truer companionship than with you my faithful steed!
From long lazy rides in lush green fields on warm bright summer days
To tranquil wooded trails and dusty old roads, you've carried me all the way
You saved my heart, you saved my mind, you saved me from it all
And I owe you my life, I owe you the world for answering my call
For you I do it all...
Always in my heart I know you'll be, no matter what time brings
For it cannot separate two spirits joined
Or the memories that make their hearts sing
Together we answered the call
For you my wonderful friend... I did it all

The Rainbow's End

At the end of every rainbow there lies a pot of Gold
Or so hail all the Stories that I have been told
But what do my Wondering Eyes behold?
A Greater Treasure today here unfolds
A Greater Treasure for some indeed
For at the end of this rainbow lies a Steed!

A Fair Creature that can truly make one’s Heart Sing
A creature treasured by both Pauper and King
Their Strength surpassed only by their Humility
While Chiseled Beauty defines their Nobility

So if Treasures of the Heart are what you seek
Next time you see The Bow just take another peek
One might just find the Truest of Friends
Waiting there at The Rainbow’s End!

Clouds

The clouds are massive and dark
but they move through a silken blue sky
                                   with no harmful intentions

The wind is steady and cool
                                                                    yet somehow it warms me
                                                                with the smell of spring

One drop of rain falls to my face
if only to remind me …
        of possibilities

The sun takes it’s curtain calls between the clouds
                                 it’s brilliant face
                                   never revealed too long

The birds call to each other in chaos
                                                         still the plan is clear…
                                                                            one world

My thoughts are massive and dark
but they move through a silken blue mind
                                    with no harmful intention

Summer Snow

Cotton flies like summer snow
Through the little city with no one to clothe
Descended from giants whose purpose long forgotten
That even in this fabricated world...
Nothing feels better than cotton
Fluffy clouds carry the tiny seeds
Across the wind with no one in need
The white puffs dance and twist and weave
Like tiny sprites in the summer breeze
Till finally they must hit the ground
Or whatever else happens to be lying around
They line the dirt trails and driveways and streets
Sticking to everything that they meet
They give a soft feel to month of June
But of a light white dusting nothing is immune
I saw my dog salted and thought into what has she gotten?
Then laughed and said "Oh!"
"It's that cotton pickin, frickin cotton!"

Remnants of Roxanne

Remnants of you Roxanne
Drape over my memory like a warm blanket

I can still see you there just over my shoulder
Your smiling eyes and toothy grin beaming up at me

I still feel your warmth in the rays of the sun
And I still hear your voice in the winds that blow across this land
This land... your home
Will forever feel the presence of your shadow watching over...
Watching over us all

And though I am sad to be parted from you my friend
I am reassured to know...
That now there'll be someone to watch over me wherever I go

- for Roxie, my faithful wonderful friend

Book: Reflection on the Important Things
