Cherry Trees

I do not know what grieves me more, the slant
Of light that veils the face of April snow
As Cherry trees begin to shed and know
Their time has passed them by, or the slow chant
Among the boughs, a keening of despair
For what was beautiful, so short a stay
Of fragile company that shift and sway,
Wait on the wind to float them to the air.
How many times the staggering stem divines
Its future memories in retrospect
And props the treasure that will be stole,
Know only that the cost is great yet finds
Some comfort in its mind to recollect
It's labours in the making of a soul.

Perhaps the Truth

Perhaps the truth should soften its face
So the great lie need not expose its hidden truths
To the shame of so many, stained by an act of
Self inflicted casual violence, ruining a nation.

For who is the greater sinner.
The liar or the listener.
And of the lie whose truth is known
By both, becoming the spoken word
Debased and futile.

And Jesus said "forgive them
For they know not what they do"
Yet how can they forgive themselves
Who peddled in the lie knowing the truth.

For a man is nothing without honour,
Just the spittle to grist the wheel of the great lie
Afraid to look in the mirror of his soul
For the mirror tells only the truth
Revealing the petty stupidity
Of a fool.

Withered Leafless Trees

Withered leafless trees
Clinging to old roots
Sway fearful of the wind,
Murmuring among themselves
With dull nonsense
About the rains.

The doltish deceive themselves
That winter is a prelude to the Spring.
Have they ever learned the truth
Or have they read the timeless lie
And believed it true.

Summer is its own season
Stirring the soul with its light.
The earth fragrant with decay,
Blooming as if blanched with treason.
For the buds are flowering
Now, readying for the blight.

In the beginning the end
Wasn't written, hope survived
And the brief flickering light
Held promises even in its youth
As the dead clay thickened
About the truth.

Yet so many perish,
Lost in the dimming of the light.
Even as they flower they fade,
Eunuchs to the possibilities.
Marching to the tune of
Vacant wisdom from old men
Who know nothing but
The silence of their thoughts
And the stillness of their minds.

Thus as the flames, leaping
Down the seasons and the years collide
Leave fragments that spark even the deadest eyes
I see in each face the hollow minds
And the terror behind those
Glowering facades.

The trees, in the twilight born
Among the wilderness of dead leaves
On rocky soil and outcrops of stone
Grow sickly silent as their futures, shorn
Of promises they can't beget.
And the coming years stored only with regret.

Leaders

When I have seen the rise and fall of fools
Whose empires dissipate upon a whim.
These tyrants and these clowns who get to rule
And grey the light to make the world so grim.
What madness stored within the hearts of men
Believe that power and glory is a right,
And we allow them, time and time again,
To lead, and take us back into the night.
Perhaps this is the way that men must live
To ride the tides of time and serve these knaves.
Whose role in life is just to bow and give
Who think them free but really are but slaves.
Until that time when man can see the light
His fortunes will be bound to hate and spite

Le Salon De Coiffure

Mon Dieu she shrieked, I watched him standing there,
Beneath the Gogh, the suit was Weatherill.
He sipped cognac (Eden de Gautier)
And on his arm some filly from Brazil.
You heard, of course, poor dear, she knew the drill.
What must she think: her dress, she wore Chanel,
The shoes, Vuitton, I thought were overkill
But then she smiled; I swear he almost fell.
Madame, the coiffeur calls please take the chair.
She feigns a smile, the fragrance tastes Patou.
He's suave, he knows, he gently combs the air
And asks, Madame, what can I do for you.
She flicks her hair as if she's in distress.
He knows she knows that men have died for less.

Hunger

The bounty that I'd hungered for
I gained yet spurned to dine
And behind the mirror looking
I feared its crumbs where mine.

Not that I was sated
From life's necessities
But left the the table waiting
On the plenty I could see.

Maybe I was hungry
From the outside looking in
Or that the bounty hungered for
Would take me back again.

Perhaps it was a hunger
That yearning takes away
And I no longer hungry
Had no reason now to stay.

When the Moon Casts Its Silver

When the moon casts its silver on the sea
And the cold waves echo their monotone
I remember because you walked with me
Of a time when I didn't walk alone.

I felt the thunder falling from the cliffs
Surround the sand-dunes reaching out to sea.
I will pass through death and then thereafter
Before you walk these paths again with me

After the Commotion

After the commotion and the grave,
All that's left is the quiet.
And to listen but only hear
The strangeness of the night.

When all is gathered up
It seems almost the same.
As love is swept away
And the heart not used again.
