Scented Leaves

INSPIRED BY “SCENTED LEAVES” CONTEST SPONSPORED BY KIM RODRIGUES Aromatic avenues with the scent of your perfume Lingering on each leaf you grace with your presence Those delicate feet treading the petalled pathways of his heart Enticing a new spring in the Autumn of his life Autumn A cold bleak reminder of the rains that are still yet to fall And yet, he sees the smile that your soul wears just for him And the seeds are sown in the depths of his heart A heart that he thought no longer beat A heart that he no longer wanted to beat Because a beating heart can bleed Faster Harder Making him weak He is a man He cannot afford to be weak He must be strong He must prepare for torrential downpours He must retain his shelter His armour He must not wear a smile for you “He will not!” he tells himself. Yet somehow those scented leaves make him forget himself And it’s Spring again And he dons a secret smile You intoxicate his senses and he wants to indulge in you more He needs you. Craves you. He loves it He hates it He no longer knows what to feel Trapped His tortured pragmatic mind Wrestling with a drunken heart Wanting to be loved Afraid of what will become of him If love walks away So, he aspires to become love That way he gets to be the one to walk away He will love you a little And discard of you a lot He will maintain control Control of himself Control of his fears At least That is what he thinks YOU With the look of adventure in your crystal blue eyes And your aromatic fragrance of freedom Wafting, as you inhabit all who inhale your inner beauty It’s a scent that lingers You are that scent The smell of what could have been He will forever wear it Carry it in his heart Or his mind – Whichever wins at the end of each dreary day Now Autumn is not just a reminder of death Of life It is a reminder of death Of love Still those aromatic avenues are filled with the scent of your perfume Lingering on each leaf you once graced with your presence Those indelicate feet trampling the putrid pathways of his hardened heart Enticing a new harsher winter in the awful Autumn of his lonely life Midnight Aurora November 12th 2019

Apocalypse

Careless whispers from sordid lips
Echo through the wooded landscape of hearts.
Destructive wants and needless needs,
Carried on the remnants of rust and bone,
Discarded amongst the fallen bridges,
Where once that precious garden grew—
Abundant petals with morning dew…

Oh how those poetic colours swirled
In the abstract minds of troubled youth,
With Silver tongue of rivers deep
And how that made the willows weep.
They wept in mournful sorrow first
Then blew light-heartedly in swift gay breeze,
                      Swaying merrily to gardener’s tune,
                      Reciting songs of lovers’ moon.

                      Drooping soon, one by one,
                      Neglect: naïve or playboy rule?
No willow’s death carved into stone
                      Sighs forgotten—another clone.
But each one knew they weren’t alone
With all decaying days that passed.
And thoughts of how the last was strewn:
Loved too quick, deceased by noon!

Empty melodies confined to ash
No garden path to lead them up,
The fickle gardener’s longing tales:
Seeking roses, endless fails.
Bitter stumps, now burnt and bare,
Fruitless end to nature’s womb,
Apocalyptic trails of dirt
Sporadic care and endless hurt.
Acidic rain to wash away
Polluted minds and drunken hearts,
A world once loved now fades to grey
Pastel night now charcoal day.
Neverland: a silly notion
Truth keeps blooms of love in motion,
A life of fantasy fulfilled
Though one of lies is one half lived.

To Erase the Memory of You

To Erase The Memory Of You To erase the sunspots of the mind, The memories that are you, The dotted sunshine through the years, Enslaved in lover’s hue. To rid the body of all the pain And showers flooding through, Grey clouds that dissipated With your songs and rainbow view. To have lived a life having never known The warmth and deep connect, The nurture feigned for access, Prior to drought and harsh neglect. To forget the madness of the love And desire I felt so true Would be the agony and ecstasy In this garden made for two To forgive and not forget Is now all that will ensue, But I forgive myself for loving you For it wasn’t hard to do. 17th October 2019 Midnight Aurora

No Love Requited Left To Claim

Tonight, the rains gush down upon my life,
Like shards of glass they cut through every vein.
Your footsteps, plodding heavily with strife,
Regretful puddles echoing your pain.

To walk away can be the hardest thing,
When there’s no love requited left to claim.
Though better than to die amidst the cling
To hope, my heart, for yours, will feel the same.

The passion swells, though muted by the grief,
And all the growing distance seems so wrong.
Then suddenly I’m cast into belief,
For you, I’d held affection all along.

If there was but one thing I’d wish to say,
My absent tongue would call to you, “Please stay!”

60 Seconds

60 Seconds

Gruelling nights with haunted dreams
Explosions tearing at my seams
The worst, last night; I couldn’t sleep
My expendability made me weep.

With dawn awoke a brand new day
A deathly mare in my mind lay
And there it lay until at last
60 seconds had oddly past.

60 seconds not thinking of you
Acidic eruptions did not spew
From the pit of my stomach to expel my heart
First waking moments not torn apart.

The realization made me smile
I pondered it for a while
The first 60 seconds that you weren’t there
The first 60 seconds I did not care.

No thoughts of kisses on my lips
Or intertwining fingertips
No mocking jokes to make me giggle
Or cheeky moves to make me wiggle

60 seconds without your eyes
60 seconds without your lies
For 60 seconds my heart was mine
For 60 seconds I did just fine.

Sadness, still it lurks within
But I shan’t touch a drop of gin
Those seconds showed me I shall win
Now the healing can begin…

Silent Is the Spring

Silent is the Spring

Silent is the birdsong
In the early morning Spring
Lonely are the daffodils
And the sunshine that you bring
Abandoned is the heart
That you nurtured through the Fall
Winter now encased
Forever frozen in a wall.

Joyless are the nights
No requests to dream sweet
Searing are the memories
Silhouettes upon the sheet
Arid is the sunken soil
No more roses left to bloom
Withered petals blowing
In the wind of silent doom.

What was once a pleasant landscape
Decays in emotional drought
Time an ongoing enemy
Leaving nothing but increased doubt
Salted streams try wash away
The torture now so violent
Never has one lived through such
A Spring so painfully silent.

Battlefield of Love's Torment

Achingly, I watch as you frequently fall For the idyllic notion of unconditional love The dream, the desire, the fantasy Drawn, inexplicably, to the potent flame Of one who ignites the spark You learn from her, confide in her Losing yourself As she reheats each chamber of your tepid heart. You feel safe in her presence Becoming stronger, happier, Each time you put a smile on her face And oh, how her eyes light up… You do that That’s your power The power to bring her joy You feel invincible Yet you can’t help thinking “She will leave eventually. They always do.” Still Your body aches to touch her Just one inch of her delicate skin. And as your fingers caress hers Your heart falls Fast But it’s not enough. You want your soul to dance seductively with hers You want to live an unprecedented moment of bliss- Savouring precious minutes as they come She makes you want to share your thoughts Your dreams, your memories Making you laugh Hard Until those destructive demons surface And you view it as a power that she holds over you. So, you distance yourself. You can’t give her that control You’re conflicted Tormented Back and forth Negative interpretations Fighting with the peace and tranquillity She brings to your day. Your life with her now a constant battle Between the heart and the mind. And in all the inner turmoil You lose sight Of the moment you so desperately want to live in That moment of love, That feeling of love. And in your damaging distance Propelling pain Setting fire to the flag of love she waves for you You unknowingly annihilate her world Over and over again A vicious cycle of relentless conflict No ceasefire in sight And when you’ve finally pushed her enough She retreats, back to the trenches, Vowing to never let you hurt her again. And finally, it sinks in… She’s gone. As good as dead! Now a black hole exists Where once a rainbow coloured your sky And you tell yourself how right you were To expel her from your heart You knew she would walk away You were right She obviously wasn’t the one for you Because if she was She'd have put up with anything- Accepted who you really are Unconditionally Now stranded in the sands of solitude, You muster the strength to yearn again For one who will answer your call The woman of your dreams So, you meet someone Again Who makes you laugh Reawakens desires And you wonder… “Could she be the one?” And Oh... How you love to make her smile

The Call of the Fray

Inspired by the poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Goodnight" by Dylan Thomas and the following quote by William Shakespeare: “When he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.” - Romeo and Juliet The Call Of The Fray Beware the insidious light of day, As slumber plummets from a darkened height. Cast with great might the morn’s sunrise away. Only in dreams are you safe from the fray, Turn to these arms of caress and delight. Beware the insidious light of day. One gentle kiss upon lips will delay Incessant pleas of dawn’s meddling invite. Cast with great might the morn’s sunrise away. Entwined, we dance in love’s infinite sway On intimate sheets of a tender night. Beware the insidious light of day. Silhouettes merging in twilight’s array, Enslaved again by your magical sight. Cast with great might the morn’s sunrise away. Keep still, beloved, if I am to stay, Or this bouquet will fade with mournful plight. Beware the insidious light of day, Cast with great might the morn’s sunrise away. 15th November 2019 Midnight Aurora

Midnight Memories

Midnight memories of moonlit bay
When in his arms young passion lay
Beneath the twilight prior to dawn
He the prince and she the swan

With an exchange of funny quips
He craved sweet nectar of her lips
Citrus notes from her perfume
Intoxicating thoughts consume

Ignited passion in their eyes
Fuelled by fun and restful sighs
Just one touch upon her skin
Awoke the lust and carnal sin

Now love cascades down delicate flesh
Like cellist and cello bodies mesh
Entangled dreams and shared desires
Merging in those raging fires

Exploding waves upon the rocks
It’s open now, Pandora’s box
Friendship gone - it’s something else
What happens when the passion melts?!
