My Love
We met on the stage some forty years ago You were partnered with another in the show It wasn’t your looks or your eyes or your voice But your huge heart that at last made my heart know. Though you hadn’t yet shown that you’d ask me out I told Mother you were the man I would wed She laughed at my obviously clueless crush But years later remembered the words I’d said. It took you much less time than mom to come ‘round As you asked me out only two weeks later A broadway show followed by dinner in town How could this possibly get any greater? I wondered if you heard my heart skipping beats Or sensed me gasping for breath desperately Knew the surge of adrenaline when you smiled Or my dread of the night’s end separately. What I didn’t suspect, ‘til at my doorstep Was that you could be just as nervous as I! A tall Adonis making endless small talk But your demeanor betraying you as shy. Unsure if you should try to kiss me or run You finally chose a more chivalrous route! You gently raised my hand to your trembling lips Accidentally kissing your own, so cute! Still I’m captivated by every nuance Just your quick glance starts my sensory parade Soon forty years together, most of them wed And even today the enchantment won’t fade. It has matured with us, and better by far As with knowledge comes confidence and rapture You and I dance through life with you at the lead Hip-hop harmony forever to capture. How we laugh when we’re walking and holding hands And young couples giggle and call us so “sweet” Had they an idea how hot our passion They’d blush and then quickly cross over the street! To you, my dear husband, I offer this verse A tribute to my unending devotion And if you meet me on the deck at 6:30 tonight We will both keep our life’s dance in sweet motion. March 10, 2019. #3
