She's Always Drawing Mermaids

She’s always drawing mermaids, and they bear resemblance to their artist, for each one is but a girl. Dark, wavy, thick, long hair hides pre-pubescent breasts; Elysian the islands drawn for all her mermaids seem . . . so different from her own reality. The islands that she colors are her dream. She also yearns to swim the wondrous sea. She’d have a mermaid’s iridescent tail . . . No place between two legs to cause her shame! She’d be a strong free mermaid, but she’s frail, and so she sketches dreams she cannot claim. Her mother sees each picture that she’s drawn, yet fails to see her daughter's joy is gone. For William Kekaula's Sonnet's Salutation Poetry Contest From 2011, this is one of my sonnets with the deepest metaphorical meaning

WOW...I wondered how I missed this but it is from years ago....and still magnificently crafted and metaphorically meaningful on so many levels. Congrats Andrea

I've been moving forward in time through your sonnets, and was so excited to reach this one and read it again. It's one of my 10 favorites of yours, and a fave. A real psychological masterpiece. I'd love to hear the genesis of this write. Very touching, and bittersweet.

wow, I am glad you like it as much as I do. It just came to me, perhaps as i was writing it using Buzz words or something. I really can't recall. Had I used it in that sonnet contest we entered?

You completely surprised me with the ending...so sad. But she at least can live as a mermaid in her dreams. Congratulations on your top win Andrea.

This has a somber, though lovely tone of being the forgotten child. Nicely done, Andrea! Congrats to you!

This Poem is WICKED GOOD. The brutal shift in line ten turns this sonnet on its head and spins the readers as well. Thanks for entering the contest with this one.

Andrea, this is a powerful poem, subtly written it draws the reader in and then....exposes the lies and trauma. I don't do favorites often but this is going to be "faved". Great write.

This is very moving and subtlety portrayed. If you have a chance read my Canvas poem I wrote a few days ago it touches on this sad reality.

Simply, a very beautiful sonnet my friend! A heart touching piece full of art and mother-daughter love. Work has kept me away from the Soup; so glad to come back to a spectacular sonnet!

Congratulations on your awesome win in Deb's "Children" Contest, Andrea. If I read this right, it is heartbreaking as there are so many little girls who are broken and parents are unaware... Love, Annalise

Stinging write here, Andrea. The "no place" line gave me the queasy/uneasy feeling and was very, very well done. Well worthy of its win, as are all your creations. Been meaning to write you for days. About my view, yes I (now) live in a mid rise apartment. My balcony has a "Rear View Window" (Hitchcock) view. At night I see people going about their business. My kitchen view is split, to the left: Busy intersection, parking lot and mall, street lights, to the right: Creek, park, greenery... :-)
