cob swan and I have met here many times
as heaven's hem is melting, pink and peach
a waxing gibbous moon now peeks and climbs
its timid cheeks, soft-blushing like the reach
my dipping oars, with rhythm, cut the lake
while swan divides the silence, just behind
to wend the wondrous ribbons of my wake
and weave them to this covenant we bind
we two are old in more than but our years
yet always yearn the romance of our youth
so here we share our travels and our tears
to hope for warmer days and sweeter truth
as swan, upon the breath of Autumn, flies
last call for lonely hearts and empty skies.
