The Bride Trilogy

THE RELUCTANT BRIDE

She is getting married today, my childhood sweetheart. I catch her eye and in that instance her sensual lips curl in a half-smile. I would like to think that it contains a message – even an apology – as I am not the groom. Her chocolate brown eyes hold a challenge as the church minister asks whether there are any objections to this proposed union. For a fleeting moment I am tempted to unmask the churly fellow for the unsuitable match he is, but content myself with taking the photograph surreptitiously with my iPhone. It is fitting that the picture isn’t perfect.

THE BRIDE

A serene sunset paints the alluvium at the shore line in tones reminiscent of a blushing bride. The glassy surface of the lake reflects the gently swaying of a lone tree. Whispers of wind weave through the willows, sharing secrets of yesteryear. Each gentle gust carries a chorus of memories, softly sung by the wind's lament. The trailing weeping willow tree branches sweeping the water are dripping with her tears, trying not to merge with the discarded bouquet swirling in the eddies at her feet. Thankfully, the timeless beauty of nesting birds returning in the twilight creates a moment of pure, peaceful perfection.

THE BRIDE’S DREAMS

She had thought that love was only a game; something one could wear like a badge to garner envy amongst friends. The chill of the night enfolds her troubled emotions where dreams are unwelcome. A Stygian cloak of loneliness weighed heavily on her as she awaited an elusive epiphany. Finally, the watershed moment came, bringing the realisation that the light, the very fire of love, is from within. If only she has the courage to reach out and follow her dreams. Lifting her head, shedding the burden of perfidy, her heart becomes exposed to light. The dawn chorus accompany her lover’s aubade.

Hi Suzette. I can’t imagine a cloak more dark than loneliness. This so beautifully composed with lovely imagery and the solace of nature intertwined. Weddings are always such a watershed moment and how many of them must have the weight of their decisions uppermost and how many who are opposed have ever spoken up. Intriguing premise and well executed. Cheers, SuZ
