One Year Older

“I am one year older,” he declares, proud.
Though it is only by two weeks, he leaps
For any opportunity to claim
A victory over his smiling friend.
The joy of childhood is still present
In their laughing eyes and cheekiest grins.
In the bright days of secret crushes and
Sugar rushes, nothing can come between
Him and her. Time can’t compete with the bond
From elementary seats, or so they think.
She moves away and he stays the same. What
Good does growing up bring? They grow sadder,
Gladder, and madder. Teenage years really
Sting. While they keep in touch, they use their
Friend as a crutch. Life can amount to so
Much. At fifteen he leaves the world too young.
Many weep, she leaks, and his mother sobs
Herself to sleep. O’ why does havoc wreak?
“I am one year older,” she cries out, drowned,
For in this there is nothing to be proud.
