Breathless

Breath(less)

it happens every day
	all day without thought
we breathe

life-giving oxygen
 sustaining our organs keeping
	our hearts
                 and lungs pumping

one day there’s a catch
 in its rhythm
	 	climbing stairs walking

a pause to catch the breath
         we hadn’t really noticed

we start to pay attention
		to
            our breathing

we slow down more naps
 breathing becomes
               conscious more effort required

the heart not doing its job
  beginning to fail oxygen?

old age is catching up with us
	but we’ll continue living life
as long as we have breath
