By the Riverside

BY THE RIVERSIDE

As I sat by the riverside,
Calm and running wild
Deep inside of me, waves clash
Sabre-rattling for supremacy

As I sat by the riverside,
Blurred images, fleeting past
Renaissance, reminiscence
Pruning past histories

As I sat by the riverside,
A macabre dance of swords
Flash of imagery

The Labour Kingdom

The Labour Kingdom

The owl perched high and tight
Hooting, heralding the black night
Chirping crickets darken the silence
The night, still far from morn

The animals in their shadows
Alert eyes pierce the hollows
Hm! A deceptive stillness
A world bathed in grey colour

An ominous predator prowls
Waiting to spring for brawls
His traps ever gaping open
Till all preys are gone and dead

Tricks, treacherous Bermuda vacancies
Set for the hapless standing entities
To proclaim independence from want
And preys apply, unknowingly for

He is the devouring deity
A demigod short of eternity
Paw sharp, reflexes ever quick
Set to conquer, but looses to none

Standing atop many skulls proud
He beats his chest aloud
For in the face of pleading mercies
Blood trail his hind steps

Surrounding façade feeds his crest
Ever amiable to the yelping breasts
His desire inflamed by bolsterers
Steps prodded insatiably for blood

Yearn reach for the bright Morn
‘Tis a season to smile, nay mourn
The night… black and young
He rules undeniably this enclave.

Age-Grade

The smell of joy
Filled the atmosphere
Painting the maidens
With “Uli” designs

Footsteps of music
Traverse the square
Moulding youthfulness
Into ecstatic gods

Waters, dancers of death
Flood the arena
Carting enroute
All to the earth’s bosom

The Great Achiever

“Agha Ojadili”
(The Great Achiever)

Dance steps reverberate in the square
We celebrate a feasting festival
A special festival of achievement
Albeit of a silent kind

Animated bodies writhe in rhythm
To ecstatic drumbeats and “udu”
The “oja”, reeling out praise names
Of none other than the achiever’s

Failure it says, is orphaned
But success, a dozen kinsmen
Several toes tip and push
To behold “Ojadili”, who overcame

In his honour maidens display
The sacred dance of maiden-ness
A silent shouting contest
To woo him you may ask

The spirits bow in shame
He came, saw and conquered
Desecrated their invincibility
But, stood tall to tell the tale

Rejoice, rejoice you tribesmen
An epoch has just commenced
Reach the crescendo of ecstasy
Rippling muscles and chests

Beware! Be on guard “Ojadili”!
The soloist “Oja” rings aloud clearly
The war is fought, won and kept
The two you did and the third?

My Resolve

My Resolve

I must, even when strangulated
I’ll wrestle laxity spirits
Trample financial boulders
Level opposition Mountains
Muster my breath against ill winds
Dry up the sea of worries

I must, even when strangulated
Race against age and time
Walk on the waters of faith
Cultivate farms of goodwill
Play the music of love
Must above all, survive!

Ancestral Visit

Ancestral Visit

Floating the tar
Whirlwinds roar afar
Leaving in its wake
Dusts to their fate

Our ancestors are come
From a beyond, formless
A turn to left and right
Scolding juveniles at night

The stones begin to roar
As frights take to soar
Like flowers will shrink
All faces would shriek

Pray, mercy we ask
Burden not such a task
On generations behind
Ruler ship of the blind

War for preservation
Your heirs race extinction
Dangers siege the homestead
Grant nothing else instead.
