Passions Flower
Edward Clay
March 2008

Hibiscus
no wall-flower you.
Nor Nosegay laurel.
Not wormwood at virgin’s-bower.
So sweet William
seeing Venus’s looking-glass
discovers a Passion-flower....

Come Back Little Sheba
barnum would have been proud

The berries fill the cherry tree
Sweet William are blooming nearby
All around, where hummingbird fly
Scents to smell and colors to see

The berries fill the cherry tree
Where the fresh breeze moves on the hill
Moving with time, the seasons spill
Beautiful sights like this for me

Sweet William
Different flowers,
White, blue, pink and red.
They all receive rain showers
And grow astoundingly on flower bed

An expanse of air and sun –
Along with fruits and vegetables
He brought home for my Mum.

Sweet Williams bring it home to me
I’m still the child I used to be....

In the beginning,
the wood floor’s purpose
granted ease of care.

Grandchildren, however,
took two running steps
in sock feet, and slid
all the way down the hall.

Sweet William and Petunia,
sent feline fur floating
through breathing space
as they chased one another
and batted toy mice
across the shiny planks.

The warm, wooden hue
furnished a fitting tableau
with the furniture
of our casual lifestyle.

Peace and contentment,
settled by design
on multi-purpose surface....
