Stepdaughter
When anger clouds your eyes,
And your heart fills with rage,
Unable to hold back
The hurt inside;
When you lose control
Of your inner storm,
Expelling evil
On those around you;
When I feel your blows
Against my body,
Fierce and desperate,
Like a trapped animal,
I know you don’t want
To be this way–
I know you don’t want
To hurt anyone
But I also know
That I would rather take
One thousand blows
Than see you hurt
And I would take
One thousand more
To keep you safe
From him.
