My Name Is Simon
From the time of Jesus' betrayal to the time of his death, there were several names mentioned--some several times. A few like mine were mentioned only once. For example, Malchus whose ear was cut off by Peter, Annas,
a relative of the High Priest, and my two sons Alexander and Rufus who were not in any way a part of the story.
But I was very much a part of the story. It appeared to have been simply by happenstance or coincidence. Or was it really? It was clearly not my plan. But for the longest time, I mused about the incident until I now believe that I was a vital part of God's plan.
I was simply a common citizen from the country of Cyrene, visiting or passing through the city of Jerusalem. To my fellow mortals, I was merely a common person with a common name. But like all of his children, to God, I was very special, in a special place, at a very special time--God's timing. The next thing I knew, I was being compelled to help Jesus bear his cross. I had no plans to witness a crucifixion, much less assist in one.
We have a purpose in life, and God has the lesson plan.
We all have a cross to bear, and sometimes, we are called
upon to help others bear their cross. My name is Simon.
Happy Easter.
