by Nikki Giovanni
 I always like summer
Best
you can eat fresh corn
From daddy's garden
And okra
And greens
And cabbage
And lots of
Barbeque
And buttermilk
And homemade ice-cream
At the church picnic
And listen to
Gospel music
Outside
At the church
Homecoming
And go to the mountains with
Your grandmother
And go barefooted
And be warm
All the time
Not only when you go to bed
And sleep

by Mari Evans
and the old women gathered
and sang His praises
standing
resolutely together
like supply sergeants who
have seen
everything
and are still
Regular Army: It
was fierce and
not melodic and
although we ran
the sound of it
stayed in our ears . . .

Saints in the hands of Christ

Jn.
10:28,29.
Firm as the earth thy gospel stands, My Lord, my hope, my trust; If I am found in Jesus' hands, My soul can ne'er be lost.
His honor is engaged to save The meanest of his sheep; All that his heav'nly Father gave His hands securely keep.
Nor death nor hell shall e'er remove His favorites from his breast; In the dear bosom of his love They must for ever rest.

Would that by Hindu magic we became
Dark monks of jeweled India long ago,
Sitting at Prince Siddartha's feet to know
The foolishness of gold and love and station,
The gospel of the Great Renunciation,
The ragged cloak, the staff, the rain and sun,
The beggar's life, with far Nirvana gleaming:
Lord, make us Buddhas, dreaming.

by Isaac Watts
 Praise for the gospel.
To our Almighty Maker, God, New honors be addressed; His great salvation shines abroad, And makes the nations blest.
He spake the word to Abraham first; His truth fulfils the grace; The Gentiles make his name their trust, And learn his righteousness.
Let the whole earth his love proclaim With all her diff'rent tongues, And spread the honors of his name In melody and songs.

A blessed gospel.
Blest are the souls that hear and know The gospel's joyful sound; Peace shall attend the path they go, And light their steps surround.
Their joy shall bear their spirits up Through their Redeemer's name; His righteousness exalts their hope, Nor Satan dares condemn.
The Lord, our glory and defence, Strength and salvation gives; Isr'el, thy King for ever reigns, Thy God for ever lives.

by Omar Khayyam
To drink wine and rejoice is my gospel of life. To
be as indifferent to heresy as to religion is my creed. I
asked the bride of the human race [the world] what her
dowry was, and she answered: My dowry consists in the
joy of my heart.
