Poem
I have seen the memories that fell from this time and age, They been scattered on the floor; they been fading from the page. Have felt my heart a' tumbling through an empty, hollow rage; An' I've heard children crying from a distant, unlit stage. I've marched along to trumpets an' I have danced to the song, Tried walking beside the meek while I'm running with the strong. Have seen my thoughts a' drifting off to where they don't belong; An' I've heard children crying after mothers have passed on. Been told about beginnings traveling without an end, Like mighty rivers flowing far beyond the coming bend. I was tossed to the wilderness but I made it back again; An' I've heard children crying but I just can't tell you when. There’s a yellow moon a’ rising high above a foreign shore, Where they hold on to tomorrow like it’s coming nevermore. The whispers in the sea breeze just keep tapping at the door; An’ I’ve heard children crying like I’ve never known before. Now there comes a distant calling that is leading us astray, We been hoping for forgiveness though we’ve not found words to say. In the silence of the midnight some can feel it slip away; An' I'll hear children crying through forever and a day.
